Hi! I am Jackie, a first-year college student from Papua New Guinea.
A little bit about me: I graduated high school in 2017. I believed I was gonna go places. But then my dad died without seeing me graduate because he was in another country. As a result, I postponed starting college and stayed at home to raise my brother who is 15 years younger than me. My mother works full time and all of her money goes to looking after the bills and my brother. During these past 3 years, I have been working online and raising my brother. My mother and I share the bills for our house.
I applied to colleges in the U.S because I had a sponsor who was certain they were going to send me to school. It is my dream to study in the U.S. I got into a really good college and got a substantial financial aid package. My sponsor promised me that he would pay the rest, so I paid my enrolment fee and started online because I couldn’t travel (COVID-19 restrictions).
I applied to various external scholarships for international students and got shortlisted for a few of them (https://youtu.be/ck03ul7qDmA). Sadly, my sponsor backed out after I finished my first semester because of political problems in my country. So now I have a bill of about $11,000 for the fall semester.
I love college and studying. I’m a biochemistry major on the pre-med track. And I loved meeting the students and professors from America. I did well this semester (I got a 4.0 GPA this semester :) ), and I met a lot of great people. Also, I learned a lot. Going to college really gave me a purpose. It brought back the fire that I thought I lost since my dad died. I really don’t want my journey at this college to end.
I continue to apply for external scholarships, hoping one of them would yield a positive outcome. Also, I use all of my wages to pay off the remainder of the bill, but I do not make that much money so it is progressing extremely slowly.

I’m sorry if I sound erratic. I’ve never done this before. I read the story of an international student who met a family from the U.S and they sponsored her entire college career. I don’t expect that, but that story showed me that people can be good. And I am hoping and praying for any help. Thank you again!
