Hello and thank you for reading my request.
I have been struggling to afford my commute to school over the last year. During late December of 2017, we moved to a new house that was much further away from my school than I used to be.
My commute is very expensive. The picture I linked to this request is meant to paint a picture of how my commute works. Those were light rail tickets in the picture. Most of the time I have to walk from my home to the light rail station in my town. This takes 30 minutes. I have to take a light rail train from where I live to the Trenton Transit Center. This takes about 25 minutes. Then I take the train from Trenton to Newark. Depending on which train I take, this trip is 50-70 minutes long. I tend to take the light rail from the Newark Transit Center to school, which is about 3 minutes long. In total, the entire trip is about 2 hours, which means my whole commute there and back is 4 hours for 1 day. This is very expensive as well as extremely time-consuming. With a student discount, a monthly pass costs about $265 a month. You also can’t just buy the pass at that price whenever you want either. They have a specific program in which You have to pay at a specific date and wait two weeks to be mailed to your house. If you don’t pay by that date (usually the 15th) you can’t get next month’s pass.
During the following Spring Semester I was fine because my parents were able to pay for my commute so it wasn’t a massive financial concern for me. However, it was after this period when they started getting hit with the meat of their housing expenses (mortgage and taxes). So they already confirmed they could no longer support that anymore. So I struggled greatly to stay afloat on financially while balancing a bunch of other basic expenses, both school related and non-school related.
My financial situation has been so horrible that I have been in multiple absences in all classes because I can’t make my commute and severely crippled my academic performance. I don’t get any financial aid at all because my parents are in that sweet spot of both working and making enough while also only just getting by. Tuition is entirely subsidized by loans, which sucks but its the only way and I’m to far deep to stop now.
But anyway, that should be sufficient information as to how far in the hole I am. I actually just want to finish this semester, making every last class. I have made it a priority to work with my professors and advisers on this situation and they have been tremendous help. However, especially with finals coming up, I need to be present now more than ever. And my father is currently recovering from a stroke and can’t work for six months. So if my parents couldn’t really support me before, they definitely can’t now. I also considered working during school, but I didn’t want to jeopardize my sensitive academic record anymore by providing an additional distraction on top of the general financial stress. So that has brought me here. I want to say thank you for anyone who considers this or even donate.
