Greetings everyone. To start off, I’m a 24 year old woman that was recently accepted to medical school. It was a long hard journey to get to where I am today.
When I began college, I was a first generation college student. Navigating the ins and out of classes and everyday life was stressful enough. However, I had much more added stress from my family.
Ever since I was 13, I lived in poverty. The type of poverty where our lights and water would get turned off most months out of a year. During the winters we had to try anything to keep warm. If the lights were still on then the heat probably didn’t work so we turned on the oven and opened up the door in hopes it would heat up the house. It usually didn’t work. When it came to water, we would just buy a few gallons and wash up that way. So ever since I was old enough to work, my money was used to make sure that food was on the table for the 10 people that lived in a 2 bdrm 1 ba house.
Fast forward, in college I always had to work full-time jobs to not only make sure I could stay in school but to ensure my family had lights, water, and food. The stress I endured, drove me to become blind at 21 because of stress induced diabetes. Because my family is poor and I wasn’t able to work anymore and my insurance was stopped because of this, I went into debt to get my eye surgeries and purchase the insulin I need.
From there, I attended a post-bacc program to finish my premedical prerequisites. During this time I worked the night shift in a nursing home full time while going to school full time and taking care of my grandmother. Taking care of my grandmother consists of paying rent and alk utilities so she can have a place to stay. I only make $10.50 an hour so after everything is paid, I never have enough money for personal items like a new pair of socks.
Recently, I’ve been accepted to medical school and need two installments of $500 ($1000 total) to secure my spot by Monday May 6th. I feel like I’ve worked so hard and have come so far to not continue my medical education because of monetary reasons. Any help would be greatly appreciated. Even $20 would be a help to securing the money I need to pursue my medical education. My
