Hi, my name is Michael Hill. I am currently pursuing a web development degree at Sacramento City College and am in debt to said college for an as of yet undisclosed amount due to extenuating circumstances.
Now, before I get into the circumstances allow me to tell you a little about myself. I am 25 years old and disabled to some degree due to multiple chronic conditions such as Chronic Migraines which run strongly in my family and Chronic Gastritis/Chronic Enteritis due to long term over-use of excedrin which I had used to manage my migraines. I do not currently work as I am both attending college as well as caring for my sick mother who also has migraines as well as stage 1 Non-hodgkins Lymphoma. She is also suspected to be ailed with an extremely aggressive form of breast cancer which runs strongly in the family though this has yet to be confirmed until more testing is done. Due to these facts I am unable to work and care for my mother at the same time unless doing so from home. I am searching for a part time job either as a data entry specialist or customer service job such as a virtual assistant or call center agent but as of yet have had no luck in finding work.
Since beginning I have gotten off to a rough start for a couple of reasons which I will state. The first reason is that due to the not so great advice from my academic counselor I was placed in a few classes which are incredibly advanced for a first year student. The first class was digital imaging with Adobe. Due to the fact that I had purchased the Adobe software through an affiliate known as collegebuys.org I had thought I was getting a good deal; I was wrong. I was doing quite well in the class up until the software became unavailable to me for 12 days due to licensing issues or something along those lines happened between adobe and college buys. As a result of this I was unable to access my adobe software that I had purchased for, as I have previously stated, 12 days. During this time my instructor had not pushed back the deadline for assignments and kept adding large projects for me to complete of which I was unable to do so and I ended up falling behind and getting dropped from the course. The second class was a college level algebra class which not only had a very demanding workload but also up until recently actually required 5 pre-requisite classes to complete in order to prepare for this one up until the district said it was no longer necessary. Given that I am not only partially disabled with multiple chronic conditions (which I am treating) and the workload from other classes I ended up dropping the class myself without educating myself on the consequences of doing so as I had only completed algebra 1 in highschool about 10 years ago and had not been given the opportunity to take the classes that were meant to prepare me for the class. I had utilized tutoring services through the math lab and enlisted the help of peers but no matter what I tried I could not for the life of me get a grasp of the material even after dedicating approximately 20-28 hours per week attempting to figure out the material to no avail. Due to dropping or being dropped from these classes I am in debt to the college and will most likely not receive financial aid for the next semester and as a result will be unable to financially afford to continue college. Apart from the classes I had dropped I am still currently enrolled in Intro to Computer Science as well as Intermediate Linux Operating System both of which I am doing quite well in. I am only enrolled in 4 credits as a result of having to drop classes or being dropped from the classes and even if I had had enough I have not been with the college long enough to receive scholarships. It’s a rough start to be sure but I am hell bent on succeeding in school. I’ve estimated that I will not need more than 4,000 dollars to both pay off my debt to the school and pay for additional classes. I would certainly like to get help in paying for school as my mother is relying on disability to pay our bills and we are facing significant difficulties in doing so and don’t know how long before we are eventually evicted as we are quite behind on those bills. Cost of living in California is quite high and we are struggling significantly. I have sold everything of value that I have except for my laptop and phone which are required to participate in classes and maintain communication with my doctors. Any help with this would be appreciated by both myself and my mother and the money will not go to waste. Any help with this would be appreciated by both myself and my mother and the money will not go to waste. Any excess funds will go towards paying off the bills so we don’t end up getting evicted and after that simple cost of living expenses. Thank you for reading this and again I appreciate any and all help.
