When my daughter was born nearly 7 years ago, I knew she was delayed with her growth. Seven years later and thousands of dollars in medical bills my thoughts were proven correct. As a result, we decided to send her to a private school in NY with small classes that can provide her with the attention she needs. However, the tuition can go as high as 26k a year, and that’s one of the cheapest in the area. Fortunately, we received some financial aid these past two years. However, the older she gets the higher the tuition and the less financial aid. Both my husband and I work extremely hard, at times we work 10 hour shifts with 3-4 hours in commute time to make ends meet. This is her second year in the school, which has been a success targeting her social and emotional needs. Especially since she has expressed her desire to die because she doesn’t have friends due to her medical condition.
Last year was a particularly difficult year for us. I took money from retirement and loans to pay for education and medical bills. However, the time of year has come to submit the financial aid application for school. This year I believe the lowest amount we pay in tuition is 12k, that is split into equal payments of $1200 per month. Being that we are still paying off previous loans and medical bills I’m afraid we may not have the money for her to continue to attend this school. She may have to attend the public school with at least 26 children per class.
I grew up in public school and do not criticize the education. However, it is not the greatest place to send a child with autism. Any assistance with the cost of her education is greatly appreciated.
