My name is Nicholas D’Alessandro and I am from New Hampshire. I am a second-year medical student studying in Puerto Rico to be an OB/GYN. I am also working two jobs- one as a recruiter (part-time) and the other as a tutor for 3 classes here in school. Unfortunately, this is necessary as I have rent and am unable to put a hold on some undergraduate private loans. Without understanding the process completely, as I was the first child (of 4) in my close family to attend a four-year University, my father took out a lot of private loans when I started. Now I am about $200,000 in debt while currently studying. I am only able to hold some of my loans, but unfortunately, I still owe $806 per month. The financial aid that I receive, on top of the small amount I make from my jobs (about $600 per month), is not enough to make ends meet. I also took three years off before medical school, working two jobs, making about $60,000 per year, and was only able to
start medical school with about $5,000 because I was paying about $2,000 per month in loans on top of rent/utilities/etc.
To make things worse, my father (who lives in New Hampshire) lost his job two years ago around when my parents were splitting up. Since that time, he has spiraled downwards and was recently diagnosed with dementia at the age of 63. He cannot take care of himself, make his own decisions, or work a job successfully. I am currently trying to see what care he can get while overseeing his finances while I’m living in Puerto Rico. This is very taxing and difficult to manage as there are a lot of high priority tasks I am trying to focus o
n all at once, all while trying to do well in school.
I am writing this post, begging, to see if ANYBODY can spare any money. Even $50 or $100 goes A LONG way, as It means I won’t have to pay that extra little bit. I used to work in Whole Foods in Brighton, MA and I met a lot of great people and not so great people. It has, however, taught me to give people the benefit of the doubt, to be optimistic and understand
d others, and to know for a fact that there are good people in the world who do want to help. I wish I could do the same and I believe that after being in this position, in the future I will want to pay for somebody’s loans. I understand the hardship and stress this puts on an individual person and those around them. It is debilitating and it feels like you are drowning and there is no other option. When there is no money and you are unable to go anywhere or do anything, you feel helpless. I believe in paying it forward and I would absolutely love to do the same for someone when I am a doctor and am able to. However, right now, I am the one who needs the help. Please and thank you for anything you are ab
le to donate.
