I am the child of immigrant parents in which school was the only way out to be successful. My parents had to escape their country due to the violence and political uprisings and started a new life here in the U.S. to give me and my younger sibling a better life. Unfortunately, 5 of them are still in the islands and only 2 of us are here. So I was forced to work 3 jobs to get through college and still be forced to send money overseas to my family since they were struggling to get by with food and other resources. Money became so insufficient that I had to take in a few loans to make it through school. Months later, in 2023, we encountered 5 deaths in which I had to assist in paying for funeral arrangements and be the spokesperson since I was mainly proficient in English. This has taken a toll on me mentally and physically and has affected my future goals. There were plenty of times I’ve wanted to give up because the government hasn’t been much of assistance to me which is why I’m reaching out to as many services as I can, for assistance. I keep receiving many emails from my loan servicer and it’s getting overwhelming since I cannot make any payments anytime soon. My expenses for school loans, alone, are $40,000, and then I have credit card payments to make, rent, shipping money overseas, and overworking myself to make ends meet and support my large family without living life to its fullest. I’ve been considering signing up for therapy as well because this is a lot for a young individual like me to endure. I’m in dire need of help.
Please consider my life story.
