Hi everyone! My name is Melody and I’m a high schooler from the San Francisco Bay Area in my junior year. I’m taking a full schedule of 7 classes including 3 AP (college level) courses and maintaining a 4.0 GPA (out of 4.0). As extracurriculars I also volunteer as a free elementary tutor, write and edit for a student-run newspaper, write for my school magazine, and participate in volunteer work.
This school year started off pretty rocky; I didn’t do as well as I wanted to on my first precalculus test specifically. Realistically, it’ll require a lot of work to bring this grade up to an A. I felt like giving up, settling with a B (despite it being so early on in the semester still) and just getting rid of my high standards for myself with the excuse of it being my super busy junior year, but ultimately decided to dedicate my time to studying as much for the rest of the semester as needed to bring this grade up. A lot of my other classes (especially AP Computer Science and AP Biology) really need studying time on my part too. Not even to mention the time in writing and editing that my journalism projects demand.
I found an amazing way to make use of my time recently: going to cafes on the weekend! So my recent routine has been biking over to my favorite spots with my backpack (one local cafe nearby and also one Starbucks, because it closes late at 10pm and I use their point system to work toward free drinks, haha) and sitting there for 3-5 hours getting studying done. I’ve discovered that utilizing these pleasant atmospheres that I associate with productivity helps me so, so much with getting this stuff done as opposed to doing it in my room, where I have a pretty cramped desk and at times lots of background noise from family members. Something about cafe atmospheres really help me focus, and also allows me to actually enjoy working.
However, I’ve noticed that going to 2-3 cafes every weekend kind of adds up financially. I try to buy the cheaper options except on days that I deserve it, and always limit myself to 1 item per trip. But even then I end up spending 15 to 20 dollars per weekend just to get my studying done in a nice atmosphere. As a high school student, I can’t really afford that every week, but then again, I want to be able to continue going to cafes every weekend day. This is why I’m posting this message; I considered literally sending a nicely decorated letter to the Starbucks CEO but figured I would have a better shot here. So, in case anyone wants to fund a high schooler’s studying sessions, that would be so much appreciated! Just 3$ would buy me a scone or hot chocolate at Starbucks and let me sit there for hours, and I would appreciate it so much the entire time I’m studying. My PayPal is linked below, and you could also send Starbucks gift cards directly via the Starbucks app by putting in my email.
Thanks again for your time!
