Being a single mother especially in today’s era can be extremely overwhelming. If you are one of those mothers who is doing it alone every day you know what I am talking about. It seems like the bills just continue to pile up and never end.

Researchers have said that just in 2015 year ending alone over 80 percent of the households in America that we’re single households we’re in fact ran by a FEMALE head of household which we’re mostly living very poor.

Many people may say well there is government assistance for them to get a grant but it’s hard to find and information regarding that said topic anywhere. So in hopes to help the single mothers out in the world this article will give you some insight on the different assistance topics we can cover including where and how to get a grant or scholarship. Also, you will read and see how simple it is to receive help with income expenses and medical insurance.

Are there really grants for a single mother?

Of course they do but these grants are not only for single mothers. However, that doesn’t mean there isn’t help for a mother to receive one. I know its mind boggling that the government hasn’t had any means created for money for a single mother that is actually in the shape of a grant. One thing the government does for a single mother is they assist them through a group or have set sponsors through a company, and sometimes they are covered by the actual income assistance completely.

Below are a few websites that will redirect you to free items that you can get just for registering on the website.

Low Income Assistance for Single Mothers / Government Grants

As I said there is not an official grant for a single mother available that is FEDERAL. However a single mother can go through federal programs and register and sign up for them. Those kinds of programs are usually for households with low income. Which means you would also qualify for Welfare. No matter what the case these are programs to help those who make below the limit and live poorly.

Below are different types of assistance based in the United States.

TANF – TEMPORARY ASSISTANCE FOR NEEDY FAMILIES

TANF is a crucial for many low income families located within the US.

With TANF you receive a small amount of cash every month that you can use toward your food, rent, and other necessities. However you only receive TANF for up to 60 month limit.

If you are a single mother and you have children in your home who are less than 19 years old you are eligible for TANF.

SNAP – SUPPLEMENTAL NUTRITION ASSISTANCE PROGRAM

Food-stamps or SNAP as other people may refer to is financial help for meals. You can receive money every month to place food on the table if you are on low or no income.

For most of Americans living in poverty SNAP is potentially the only assistance they can get.

Research has shown that in 2015 SNAP benefits have helped at least 45 million Americans. Most of the ones who receive the stamps are under are up to the age of 18.

When you go to use your benefits for SNAP you have your own personal debit card to ring your groceries up with at the register. If you are interested in trying to get on with SNAP benefits all you have to do is fill and application out and send it in or take it into a local office that deals with SNAP benefits.

NSLP – NATIONAL SCHOOL LUNCH PROGRAM

This is a program that gives free (or discounted) food to students whose parent’s income is bellow a poverty level. The income needs to be at least between 130-185 percent bellow the poverty line.

Most the time if a person is a receiver of SNAP benefits their children will be accepted into this program for free lunches. But, that doesn’t mean if you don’t have or receive SNAP that your children are disqualified.

You need to contact your child’s school to apply.

TEFAP – THE EMERGENCY FOOD ASSISTANCE PROGRAM

Food for the American families who are in the poverty range not matter what the age.

If you have received food stamps before or any other program assisting you and helping you such as the ones in this article you could also be approved for this program.

You will need to contact your State distribution agency to learn more about the Emergency food assistance program.

Local Food Banks

A food bank doesn’t exactly fit into the whole “Grant” program area as it is actually a location in your town where you can get food if you are in need.

Do not allow you or your family to go without food. If you ever reach that trouble you can call 211 and ask them where the nearest food bank is based on your location.

More then 200 food banks exist with the feeding america foundation and they supply enough food to feed over 40 million people.

WIC – WOMEN, INFANTS AND CHILDREN PROGRAM

This program includes a package deal where you as a mother are able to receive healthy foods, whether you are pregnant or a new mother, and also to children who are 5 or under.

WIC is a program that is temporary and only used for a short amount of time – usually between 6 to 12 months.

EARLY HEAD START / HEAD START

These programs are for children up to 5 years old.

You can receive free child’s medical and dental care along with their schooling, and dietary needs.

Find your closes headstart office on their website or call at 1-866-763-6481.

Insurance for unemployment

This is a special program which will pay you weekly if you are unemployed and it had nothing to do with you for you being fired or let go. You will only be able to receive this benefit for maximum 26 weeks. Different states have different benefit rules. But most states will average out at about 45% of whatever the average weekly income is.

Single mothers who are out of a job temporarily can find solace with these benefits and can help make the burden less for themselves because this pay will restore what you have lost from losing your work.

If you want to try and get this started and opened for you, you will have to find your local unemployment office or apply on the website for this specific program. Most states will allow you to also try to sign up for this over the phone.

Section 8 housing

Section 8 is basically a program that helps a family be able to pay for their housing. If approved you will receive a voucher of up to 70 percent of your bills (utilities and rent). You are expected to pay the other 30 percent.

If you want to apply and feel you qualify you can get in touch with your local office involved with public housing, the HUD office.

CCAP – CHILD CARE ASSISTANCE PROGRAM

This is a benefit for families who can’t afford to place their children in daycare while working.

You still have to pay a certain percentage but it isn’t a big lump of money. The less you earn, the less you need to contribute.

EITC – Earned Income Tax Credit

It is a tax benefit for people with low income. You could potentially get as much as $6,000.

If you normally have a tax rate of $1050 but you are allowed $5550 then you get refund of $4500.

There is a Children’s Tax Credit too for as much as $1,000 for EACH child.

LIHEAP – LOW INCOME HOME ENERGY ASSISTANCE PROGRAM

LIHEAP is a program that is a one time help to help pay for heating / cooling expenses.

Most of the time this is for the disabled or families with children or disabled person in the home.

WAP – WEATHERIZATION ASSISTANCE PROGRAM

Weatherization assistance program lowers energy bills for families in need. Usually the elderly and families involving children are accepted and put to the top of the list before all.

Your monthly income need to be below 200 percent poverty level.

To apply, find a local WAP center.

Medicaid

Medicaid is help with medical expenses. If you do not have health insurance this gives you certain benefits as long as your income restriction meets the level it should.

A lot of single mothers may meet the standards to be recipients of Medicaid even if you are unemployed.

Every state has different rules about Medicaid plans. You can find out exact requirements on this website.

Together with ObamaCare it ensures that even single mothers who didn’t receive any health benefits will now be able to have coverage.

CHIP – CHILDREN HEALTH INSURANCE

CHIP gives children without health insurance a chance to have health benefits all the way up until they are nineteen. It is for families whose income is too high to receive Medicaid benefits.

It provides every type of benefit you can think of — dental, eye exams, and even annual doctor’s exams.

Federal Pell Grants

Aid program for students of up to $5,815 for those in need to be able to set foot into college.

This is the best opportunity for a mother who is single to finally be able to finish her schooling and finally continue in the workforce. The money is completely free of charge with no interest rates or paybacks ever.

You need to fill out an application and submit it for a pell grant and have it turned in on or before June 30th of every year.

Federal Supplemental Education Opportunity Grant

Similar to the Pell Grant. If you already have had pell grants and you are at the top of the charts in need you will be first on the list to receive this. Depending on a persons needs that are wrapped in with their financial struggle will ultimately decide who will receive anywhere between $100 too $4,000 annually.

Charities

Charities can be a way to seek help for you and your children whether you are in need of food or clothing or even housing. A lot of charities around the world actually have their own food banks that they run and they will give you bags of free food.

If you go to salvation army a lot of the times they will let you sleep there if you have no where else to go especially if it is a result of violence.

Churches

Most churches will offer you food and clothes or maybe even a place to stay if you have been recently kicked out by the one you are living with.

To find information on this you should look through your phone books local listing or yellow page. You can also research online and see what churches are available to your area and call them and ask what services they do offer.

Loans

Single moms can receive loans usually relatively quickly but I would not recommended that at all. You could potentially go into debt and not be able to rise back from that.

Sometimes you have no choice because you have to fix your broken car or maybe pay for utilities and food and need the help right then. But you have to be able to pay that loan realistically quick.

Pay attention to your credit because if you try to get a loan through a bank or anyone they will check your credit score and see if it is even available to be able to place a loan out to you. If it is a loan that is for payday loans or credit card advances they will not run a check but you will end up paying more after fees and costs.

Line of Credit

If your credit is decent some people ask a bank for a loan personally. Most of the time this is a better idea then asking for a payday loan because if you need quick money with lower rates of interest this is it.

Personal Loans

On a personal loan interest is lower dramatically but you have to pay in instalments. It doesn’t really fit criteria for an emergency. Normally if you just tell them you do not have any more funds and that is why you need this they will turn you away. If your credit is poor you will not be able to even touch this offer.

Short term (payday) loans

This is a very popular type of loan. You may know it by the term “Cash advance.” The interest runs really high on these and it is a loan that is only for a small time frame.

This is a loan that would more then likely be considered if a problem arises and you needed to repair your car or had a disastrous dental emergency. You have to know for sure you will be able to give every penny back.

If you do not pay this type of loan back you could be in loads of trouble financially.

Credit card cash advance

Do you own a credit card? If so you will be able to get money from a bank as easy as 1, 2, 3. This is not a method that is highly praised though because as soon as you start taking money out of the bank the interest keeps rising and you also are charged for using and pulling out of the bank a fee. This is potentially the easier options if you do need cash asap but you have to pay it back and make sure you absolutely can.

When it is all said and done grants will not solve your money issues within your home if that is what you expect. To get a grant is definitely not easy it isn’t a walk in the park by any means.

If you are looking to get a more stable source of financially being stable you should probably look in areas around you or find a women shelter until you can get back up on your feet.

If you think you have all the time in the world you can apply for other areas of assistance such as Food stamps, HUD, and etc. They do take a lot of time and effort for someone to get back with you and let you know if you have been accepted and enrolled. Try finding a part time working job as a way to financially start becoming stable again.

The moral of this is you can not expect a grant to fall into your hands without effort and take all your worries away. They are only here too do one thing and that doesn’t usually fix anything with your financial setting.

This is all on you and what you decide, no one else can decide for you.

Drowning in bills and debt and trying to save my kids

Single mom losing hope

Hello, I’m a 42yr old single mom of 3. 1, 13yr old son in middle school, who has been difficult as he’s dealing w his dad becoming a absent father, 19yr old daughter who I’m also helping pay for college and wish I can buy her a car, but I can’t right now. And my youngest daughter who is 11 that is my sugar and spice and everything nice. I work hard to take care of my kids and it seems like I can never catch a break! However, within the last 4yrs he’s been struggling with addiction and suddenly forgot there’s not just his life he needs to worry about and that he still has 3kids that not only need him emotionally and physically but over the last 10months financially as well. I’ve tried to help him as much as I can, but I have 3other young humans that didn’t ask to be here that I need to put all my focus on. I live in California and the cost of living has just become so high that it’s almost impossible to not live paycheck to paycheck. I’ve had to take out loans and pull what little money I had in my 401k just to get by and pay my $3250 rent since last Sept. that’s when there dad stopped trying all together in helping me in any way. I’m tryin to do my best but I feel like I’m burying myself more and more in debt by having to take out small loans that have the highest interest because I have no other choice but to. My mom passed away in 2016 and dad passed away 2yrs ago, they were once my saving grace in times like this, but since they’ve both passed I truly have no one else I can turn to in emergency situations like I feel like this is now. Recently, life has been a little bit tough. Lost my fiancé, then I ended up losing my full time job where I made much more money. My bills were way more affordable (not due to poor performance, the owner of the company was sued and the business closed down). As a single mother, I have faced countless obstacles and persevered with unwavering determination. However, circumstances beyond my control have left me in a state of financial hardship. It is with a heavy heart that I turn to you for support during this difficult time.

Since becoming a single mother, I have dedicated myself wholeheartedly to raising my son, Alexandru Theodor, ensuring he receives the love, care, and support he deserves. My story is too long, filled with traumas, hard times, depression, and illnesses. In 2008, when my son was born, he barely could open his eyes, move his arms and his legs, and he could not held his head when he was two and a half months old. I found out that he gathers water in the brain. We went with Vojta and Bobbath therapies and Kineto therapy long hours every single day, and drugs. With the generosity from a german foundation, I was with my son in Germany, where neurologist Dr. Sitte-Zöllner from Dresden diagnosed him with KISS Syndrome. (This syndrome is unrecognized in many countries, and many doctors confound it with congenital torticollis.) “In the bottom of line, this syndrome means that your son will not be able to practice the most sports to his muscle hypotonia, and more important he will be susceptible to diseases all his life”, told me the doctor. It is so. He had asthma when he was 2 years old, many pneumonias, and he developed a serious allergic background. In present, at 14 years old, he has a bunch of allergies, KISS Syndrome, chronic sinusitis, ADHD and Hashimoto, an endocrine autoimmune disease. Is not easy at all for him.

In 2019, I had cancer surgery, and I am well now. I am an educated and strong woman, but I am tired, with chronic fatigue syndrome, bad headaches, high blood pressure, and a few digestive diseases, due to these tough challenges. Because of my chronic fatigue syndrome and others, I was not able to work, and I got laid off. I feel better now, but filled with debts.

Vacation for my kids

Am a single mother of three beautiful kids. A boy 14 years, two girls,12 years old and 10 years old respectively.

I work as a cashier in a liquor store with a minimum wage My income is barely enough for all of us,after taking care of our food,rent, clothes, utilities,I have little or no savings. Life is hard on us

Single mom of 3 falling behind on bills

I am a single mother of 3 beautiful girls who was married to a man for 5 years and when we separated he left me with a lot of debt.
I met my ex husband in 2016 and I thought I was marrying the man of my dreams. In the beginning he was very charming. He didn’t have much but I thought we could build a life together.
I got pregnant with my first daughter in 2016 and she was born in 2017. We moved in together shortly after.
My ex husband convinced me to relocate to another town away from my family and that’s when things took a turn for the worst. He isolated me from friends and family. He stopped working, he was mentally and emotionally abusive. He maxed out all of my credit cards. The car that he convinced me to sign the loan for him was repossessed. Money would disappear from our shared account with no explanation. He was cheating and didn’t hide it. He was a heavy drinker.
In between all of that I had 2 more kids and I was trying to stay for the kids but his behavior only got worse so in 2020 I decided to walk away from the marriage and move closer to my family.

I was doing ok until the beginning of this year my wages were garnished because of the repossession and I began to fall behind on my bills. It’s sad when you have to choose between feeding your kids or paying a bill. Any little that someone can help with would be appreciated and a huge blessing.

4 Month Old Mother in Need

Hello, I am a 22 year old with a 4 month old, Just graduated college last month. I have birth in March to a premature baby, whom had to stay in the NICU for a week. It was difficult leaving his and coming back home empty handed. Not only did I worry about his health, but also being able to take care of him on my own financially. I had money saved up as much as I could when I carried him and worked, but I am unable to return to work due to not having anyone to watch him while I work. I am now stuck in a position where, the money I had saved up I spent it on buying his car seat, and necessities. Also I began to use my credit card a lot lately due to not having a oncoming income. Struggling single mother ! He left us At our worst

Life comes with many obstacles but becoming a single mother wasn’t something I’ll wish on my enemy

As if being black in America was a crime , I grew up in a household that was tremendously abusive, you would think growing up what you see on television shows should be exactly how your parents should be but it was only an environment of responsibilities and discouragement after many years I’ve stirred away from marriage thinking it was only ideal for modern white families because first thing I knew was that we were black that came off an island seeking for a better future . My dad left my mom while I was still growing up leaving me to pick up the broken pieces he destroyed inside of her , because she wasn’t sure of herself , my mother hatred slowly became a vicious cycle that only resulted to mental abuse , emotional abandonment issue, and built up anger resulting to Me seeking love outside of myself because my own mother rather to see me beneath her , jealous grew everytime I achieve a goal but happiness Rained in her heart as she seen me fail in many things I wished to achieve without any reason I fleed from home countless times with anyone I could cling on to just so I don’t have to be home with my mother and tragedy became to rain, I fell heavy for a man who was older than me, seeking love out of myself I Began to battle with depression and unable to express myself to the man I fell in love with I became a shadow of who I truly was having sex countless times with this Pisces to feel the void of my pain , using drugs to cope with things that usually occupied myself the devil within me having Me unable to cope when a man would tell me he hates me , I was so mentally drained I grew up becoming a people pleaser everything Pisces wanted I would result to his every beck and call staring at my body in the mirror I felt disgusted who would really want to tell someone they honestly love that there Biggest role model , someone they use to look up to as a little kid was actually sexually into his own young daughter , how she struggled being happy because of many heartbreak so I kept a smile on my face which didn’t stay because Pisces was emotionally gambling me . Sometimes you’ll think god bring those into your life because it’s what you seek but it was becoming more unstable by the moment he began to abusive me , pull me outside of his home and slandered me every change he gets . I wasn’t nothing to him anyways just a piece of meat , it didn’t bother me because something deep inside me wanted love , I seeked validation from a man who only knew the right strings to pull inside of me . Through the emotional abuse , the gas lighting , ghosting and disrespect i still remained expecting differently if I stayed around hoping to be the best version of myself but only time would tell one randomly day I took a test with medical bus and they announced that I had HIV , my world shattered apart torn apart I ran to Pisces house begging him to come with me to see if that’s something true because I was faithful , I was loyal , I couldn’t remember laying down with anyone at that time ,he drastically ran with me to his car just to find out that his test came out negative while mines was positive, I began to cry because I didn’t believe why God would turn his back on Me after all I did out of love to remain with a man who was giving me nothing but emotional stability , I didn’t matter to him once again I was just a sex toy in his eyes it took 4-5months I found out I was pregnant the medical bus called me and told me that I don’t have any hiv it was all a misunderstanding , tear ran down my eyes because everyone turned against me even My mother which I expected , as time slowly grew becoming slowly pregnant i wanted to die , overdose medication , drinking alcohol, cutting myself was always a normal thing for me but slowly wasn’t able to do the same things anymore I became numb outrageous with everything soon as I became pregnant my suicidal thoughts became a tol on me ,never went to any hospital just was by myself through it all , I was in the hospital back and forth for three months just for some type of sickness called matisits that’s puss growing inside my breast , the pain I felt each day and began feeling felt like giving up but the hospital gave me courage even through all the difficulties, I gave birth and my single life was even worst my childs father wanted nothing to do with me or my child , living under my mother roof wasn’t a desire for my mom because she felt like she was owed money for the room I was sleeping in and without a job I’m unable to work and even if I decided to work I wouldn’t have no one to care for my son and the struggle became more heavier than ever , my phone bill , room bill even groceries became a tol so I need help I need 5,000

I’m grateful for any amount I know the saying you reap what you sow but if I gotten deeper to how I had helped my childs father of times of need and how he repayed me and his mother you’ll wonder how am I still alive

SINGLE MOTHER DISABLED FROM BEING HIT BY DRUNK DRIVER CANT AFFORD RENT OR GROCERIES

Hi there, my name is Rachel. I’m sobbing while I type this, I never thought I’d have to come to this point. I’m so sad and scared. I have no help…..

Last August I was hit by a drunk driver that was driving on the wrong side of the road. I suffered a traumatic brain injury amongst other issues and I’ve been struggling more than I already was ever since. I am told by my doctor I am not to return to work and the insurance company is no longer pay my wage loss checks. It wasn’t much anyway, barely enough to cover my rent.

My children’s father has been paying for everything for me and he is about to lose his house over me and I feel horrible. I told him I’d figure it out this time but who am I kidding….. how am I going to figure this out? I’m late on rent, it was due the 1st of the month. My daughters birthday was the 3rd of this month. I couldn’t do anything special for her. I am at my breaking point. I really truly am. I feel ashamed of myself and have no one to ask for help.

My rent is $1200

I really need groceries as well but I can find a food drive or something if need be. My main concern is my rent. I hate letting my kids see me unhappy and struggling. I don’t know how to hide it.

Single Mom in need of help to get my life started.

I hope this request finds you in good health and high spirits. I am writing to you today with a humble request for financial support that would greatly impact the lives of my children and me. I’ve never done anything like this before but I feel like I came to a point where I have no other option but to ask for help. I’m a single mother. I will be honest with you I made bad choices in my life. I married young(19)and had children. Left my family and moved with him to a new country. He’s been emotionally and physically abusive and I suffered dearly for my mistakes in lack of judgment and overall bad choices. I can take responsibility for my part in my situation and I’m reaching out here because I need help to get on my feet.

I have no formal education. I am in a different country with no family and 2 beautiful children to care for.

I find myself facing significant challenges in providing a stable home for my children due to my current financial circumstances and residency status.

I need to get myself to residency status and this is an added stress. Their father only applied for him and our children for residency. I can’t leave the country because there is an order in place preventing removal of our children.

Although I have full custody it still does not give me the right to leave with them. If I can’t figure out my visa I don’t know what will happen. Immigration keeps telling me they can’t do anything for me.

I also currently don’t qualify for a visa, there is a lot that goes into the story of why I am where I am and now on here asking for someone’s mercy and help.

I have been moving from place to place, struggling to afford anything beyond rented rooms. The lack of stability and the constant uprooting have taken a toll on my children’s well-being and their ability to thrive. It is my utmost desire to provide them with a safe and nurturing environment that they can call home—a place where they can grow, learn, and flourish.

Regrettably, I do not qualify for government support due to my residency status, which has placed me in a difficult position financially. I have been tirelessly searching for better employment opportunities, but without any formal qualifications or a lot of experience, it has been challenging to secure higher-paying jobs. Nevertheless, I am determined to improve my circumstances and create a better future for my children.

To this end, I have set my sights on pursuing a career in digital marketing and sales. I firmly believe that acquiring the necessary knowledge and skills in this field would open doors to more stable employment options, enabling me to provide for my family and break free from this cycle of uncertainty. However, the cost of education and training is beyond my current financial means.

Mother of 3 facing financial hardship due to husbands deportation

Hello to all,

I’m a mother of three wonderful boys. Ages 15,7,8. I’m writing to see if somehow I could tell my story and maybe see if I could possibly see a little light in this dark tunnel that never seems to have a way out. It has been about 6 years since my husband and I had been in the process of fixing his legal status here in the USA. then finally in December of 2022, we finally received a response. but it was not good news at all. He was to return to his country of origin a wait for them to approve his application. It has now been 7 months and still nothing. meanwhile, all of our bills have piled up on me. because my husband was who provided for our household. I have now officially maxed out all of our credit cards and had to ask for a personal loan with my car title held for collateral. and now two payments behind. I’m asking 30,000 to pay off all of my debt and have a little left to pay 6 months of rent in advance. or would really appreciate any help that could be given to my family and me.
