My name is Crystal Adams and I am a single mother of a 15 year old daughter. I graduated college in 2010 with a Associates of Applied Science degree as a Legal Administrative Assistance. I was told when I originally signed up for college in 2008 that I was entering into a field that would be wide open with jobs by the time that I graduated. So I worked my butt off, missed time with my daughter so that I could do the classes, work night after night with very little sleep. After a couple of years the time finally came, it was time to do an internship, but unfortunately I could not find a lawyer to let me do my internship with them, so I go to my instructor which promised that she had plenty of spots she could place us if we were unable to find internships ourselves. Well that was a lie, she placed me in a group called Casa of Bradley county which is nothing to do with legal. They are child advocates and they were more worried about doing fund raisers and getting scholarships to pay themselves. The program director would not even allow me to go speak with a lawyer or judge in order to get more information for my schooling. She even threatened me by saying that she would disqualify me for my internship if I didn’t go out and hang up posters for a fund raiser. Needless to say after speaking to my instructor, she advised me that this was the only option that I had and could not move me to another location. I hung it out and when I graduated in May of 2010 with a 3.33 GPA I was 20,000 dollars in debt, and started going out and trying to find a lawyers office that would allow me to come in as an entry level position. Then came the even more bad news, I didn’t have any experience in a law office and the program that they offered me gave me little to no law experience in class. I was devastated but not as devastated as I was when I was sent a letter advising me that now that I had graduated it was time to start paying back the $20,000 dollars. The best that I could do was go back into being a CNA which is what I was trying to get away from, making $9.00 hour. That was barley enough to pay my bills. I was on food stamps and falling behind on everything. So I filled out the paperwork to defer my payments. At the time I was told that it would only have to be for 7 years then they would delete off the amount that I owed because of the inability to pay and find a job in the field. Well that was a lie too. It is in fact 21 years. I am so tired of the lies and when I call it I the federal loan people they keep telling me that I either have to be a teacher or work in a not for profit program in order to have the debt cleared. I just need the help please. I have tried to do so many things and I just don’t have the money to pay this debt off. I can’t find a legal job because I have no experience and can’t get experience if they are unwilling to hire me. I live in an area where the pay is very little compared to the national levels. I work so hard and just want this monkey off my back. I am at the end this is my last resort for help. otherwise I am stuck for the next 12 years having to explain why I can’t pay this bill. The school lied the loan people lied, and the lawyers are stuck in their own little world that they have forgotten what it is like to start out and need to work in an area to get experience. If I can pay this off I will never ask for the government to help me again. They have really messed me up with this loan stuff, I think it should be illegal for them to offer it, or at least charge the school for it when they fail to teach you correctly.
