I’m a 22 year old student from Honduras currently living with my mom, two siblings (20 and 12 years old), grandparents and an 11 year old cousin.
My mother has always been my hero, she’s been a single mother for the past 13 years after our father moved out of our lives, she has kept an exhausting full-time job since then, taking jobs on the side and still somehow managing to have time for her family. With my grandparents in retirement and my sister and me being unemployed students, my mom is the only financial support of a family of seven.
With the current situation the world is facing, she has been one of the lucky ones whose job allows her to work from home in this situation. It was all good until last month. She is a secretary at a public school, which means the government pays her, and sadly our government is incredibly corrupt. Lately it has become more and more evident how they are taking advantage of these hard times, approving budget after budget for medical supplies and relief for the affected only to pocket most of that money for themselves and continuing that cycle. This has affected so many families in so many ways, and right now mine is one of those families.
At this moment, most public workers are not getting paid. Teachers, doctors, law enforcement, etc. they haven’t been paid despite still doing their job. We’ve asked the authorities about this issue several times and their response is the same: “there’s no money to pay employees right now”. They don’t give a reason, they don’t give a date when payment could be available, they just say no and still expect people to keep working. So at the moment my mom is working from home in order to not lose her job, but she’s not getting paid. We’ve received no help from the so called relief packages the government claims to be giving either.
With our family’s limited budget it’s always just enough to make it to the next month, and now we’ve reached a low point. At the moment we have about 10Lps. in our power, which is less than $1, and have ran out of food, gas and are close to running out of drinking water as well as my mom’s high blood pressure medication and my anxiety medication, which are both quite expensive since we don’t have anything like health insurance.
I honestly feel quite ashamed for doing this, because I know there are so many people facing far worse difficulties at these times all around the world. But I’m desperate at this point.
If it’s in your heart to help us out of this situation, we greatly appreciate your kindness.
Thank you, and have a good day or night.
