My name is Val, and I am a 20-year old pre-clinical nursing student from the US. I work 35 hours a week as a receptionist and record keeper at an optometrists’ office when I am not in class.
I’m posting here today because I foolishly fell for a gift card scam, and was cheated out of $5,962.09. My bank, the gift card companies, and the stores I purchased them from cannot refund the money or any of the fees associated with it. I have filed a complaint with the FTC and am in the process of filing a police report, but they’ve both told me that from previous experience, there is very little they can do to find the scammer and get my money back.
I now have no stable way of paying my bills now, as the bank shut down my account, quoting me a “threat to the institution.” I cannot use my credit card again until I can pay off the debt, which according to them, ultimately falls onto my responsibility.
I only made 13k last year, and having to repay this debt (not even considering the 20% monthly interest rate) with this salary will take me over 6 months to pay back myself– assuming I do not allow myself to buy any food, pay any bills, pay for any of my medication, or use any sort of transportation (which, understandably, is quite hard to expect.)
I’ve gone from somebody who could comfortably live off of their income to somebody who is basically surviving on water and ritz crackers in an attempt to save money. I am trying to sell a large portion of my material possessions but have calculated that it will hardly make a dent in my debt. I used to pay off my credit card statements in full and have an immaculate credit score, and now I am dealing with having to pay this money back and fixing my plummeted credit score because of a selfish scammer who didn’t keep his promises.
Please restore my faith in humanity and help me get myself back on track. I am a good person and believe in karma, and I have done nothing but my absolute best for all the people around me. I fell for this scam to begin with because I was too kind, and it came back and bit me. Please find it in your heart to help me pay this back even a little bit.
Thank you for your time.
