I am finishing my PhD and have been offered the opportunity to move to Europe to actually USE my PhD. However, my financials are very tight and I don’t think I will actually be able to move without the help from some strangers.
I grew up in a very small town, and very poor. My dad passed when I was 17 and due to a whole series of events, he went from being the breadwinner in my family to having a retraining order and no contact. I have had to work from 10 years old (babysitting) to 14 when I started working retail – I have been working and supporting myself ever since. I worked part-time and full-time all through high school, my undergraduate degree, my master’s degree, and my PhD since I had no support (or even the opportunity for support) from my family as we were so poor. Despite this, I still managed to achieve amazing grades (3.8 GPA) from pretty prestigious universities. All that being said, I did manage to take on quite a bit of debt as a result of just trying to get by myself.
Having help from others to afford both the costs of the flight, the money for a downpayment on an apartment, and maybe some furniture once I get there, would be beyond helpful! I just need a little help to get to Europe so I can really establish myself in my field and kickstart my career! Getting the chance to do that would mean absolutely everything to me and I know I would be so willing to pay it forward once I am established.
