I do not think of myself as a Senior Citizen but the reality is I am! I am 67 and after a few “Seemed like a good idea at the time” moments, I am where I am in dire need of assistance.
I have always worked hard and expected to continue until at my last job I and my team were downsized. Shortly after that osteoporosis, which had not yet been defined as such, set in. All I knew was that my knee was hurting and I was limping slightly which caused stares by would be employers. This was in Illinois.
After that I had marriage difficulties and eventually returned to New York but with no success at employment. My knee was getting worse and the doctor was able to diagnose Gout as the cause. But after several weeks he realized something else was I going on-Osteoporosis.
As I said I have always worked hard but also needed to survive. I was able to collect SSD which eventually became SS.
With a lump sum payment I had a “brilliant” idea to fulfill a life long dream and also pursue a new career. I moved to England and attempted to get voice over work, but unfortunately for me in those pre-Brexit days the pound was stronger and I could not afford to stay so had to move back to the US and am now in Portland Oregon. I have a friend here for whom this is Heaven but for me it is Hell!
I am in an increasingly violent area. My apartment complex now has Armed Security, which to me is not all that comforting!
There are needles in the streets, and countless homeless and people with mental issues that are left to fend for themselves and people in public elevators who use them as a bathroom and a place to smoke cigarettes and/or marijuana and misinterpret the term “behind closed doors”. I am not trying to be glib here just not over-graphic.
I am not happy to be in this situation. I realize that my missteps are of my own doing and I deal with that on a daily basis. I tried some thing and it did not work out.
Had I known what Downtown Portland was like I would have avoided it. Sadly, I had not been aware of subsidized housing opportunities in NYC . Once I learned of this and since I am on a low income, I applied on New York City Housing Connect. I have been on there for 5 years and under normal circumstances I was willing to wait. But this is an unsafe area and my application is lower since it is from out-of-town. So now I may have to pay full rent, which is impossible in my current state.
As mentioned, I am now on Social Security with 2 minor pensions totaling slightly over $2000 monthly. Rent in New York averages $2000 to $4000 or more.
I am from Queens but rents have gotten way over the top so I am looking towards Brooklyn which still is not that far behind. I am not looking to spend $4000 on rent but even the $2000 or even $1000 would be difficult. Initially one month rent plus deposit (another month) and here in Portland they have started requiring a last month’s rent as well. Not sure if this is a practice in New York but I have to be prepared.
lastly, although I do not have loads of furniture, I do have some so there is cross country moving expenses to deal with.
I am not proud of the situation I am in and have no one to blame but myself. But I need help and I have run out of choices.
I am not trying to amass a fortune here. I am just trying to go home to be among Friends and Family.
