My name is Delia and I am asking for help because I find myself in the worst situation ever.
I’ve moved out of my country with the intention to find a decent job and help my family (I have a 89 years old grandmother who had two cerebral strokes this year and also my mother who is suffering from breast cancer, they live together in the countryside with no access to doctors or even a pharmacy).
I chose London because everyone says there are a lot of jobs here and I saved money for a year to be able to buy a ticket and pay for the rent when I got here.
The agency who was supposed to find me a room charged me 150 pounds for their commission and when I got here I had no room and they refused to give me the money back. So I was on the street for 2 days looking for a new room and I ran into people from my own country who refused to help me even though I had the money to pay for the room. The reason was that I had no job so I couldn’t guarantee that I will pay the rent the upcoming month.
After 2 days of despair I finally found a room, I paid rent + deposit + commission and I started looking for a job. The first job I got was as a sales assistant which turned to be actually a charity door to door fundraiser supposed to work 12 hours a day with no salary, only commission if you would persuade someone to donate money. If you didn’t you could starve as far as the manager was concerned.
I couldn’t get people to donate as much as I tried and I was hungry and cold all day so I got sick.
After a while I had to quit the job and try something real, so I went for a call centre job, which was similar to what I did back in my country. Once again, the job offer did not coincide with the main duties. Fixed salary + commission turned out to be fixed salary, no commission, unpaid extra hours (I was working 11 hours a day) and unpaid 2 weeks training. They were forcing me to persuade old people over the phone to buy broadband (internet service) which they didn’t need because they were elderly, in their 80’s and 90’s.
Two weeks ago I thought about my old grandmother being slammed like that and I left the job crying because i knew it was a job which would bring my daily bread, but I couldn’t blame myself everyday for what I did. Of course I never got the promised money for the training…..
Then I started working on the street, selling souvenirs. 12 hours a day, on my feet, in November, close to the River Thames. I almost froze to death and my kidneys are a mess now, I have blood in my urine. Saturday I felt so sick I couldn’t get out of bed and I didn’t go to work. Well, guess what! the owner refuses to give me the money or to have me back and there’s nothing I can do, because I had no contract.
So now I find myself jobless, sick with no health insurance and in desperate need of money for the rent and medication. I can’t go back home without knowing I tried everything for my family. I can’t go back home even if I wanted to, because I have no money to buy a plane ticket.
Please help me go on, by helping me you are helping my family too.
