I am currently living in Hamburg, Germany waiting for my visa to teach English. Understandably, things have been delayed due to the war in Ukraine. I will have to wait 4 more months to receive my visa and start earning an income. Collecting income without my visa is strictly forbidden and punishable with hefty fines, deportation and never being allowed to come back. I will be working with people from all over the world, many of whom cannot afford to pay for tutoring. Some of these people are refugees escaping war, some are just looking for a better life. Living in Hamburg is expensive. I do not live lavishly, and I only pay for what is necessary. I must pay my rent, public transportation fees, health insurance, cell phone bill and expenses for food. My rent is 695 euros ($748 US dollars), my health insurance is 340 euros ($366 US Dollars), food is about 250 dollars, public transportation is around 60 euros a month ($64 US dollars) and my cellphone bill is $50, totaling to $1494 per month. Multiply this by 4 months and it amounts to $5,976 US dollars. I must stay in the same location as my visa is being processed. I am not allowed to return home and work as I wait. If I leave now, I have to start the entire process over from scratch, which will take longer than 6 months.
It is my dream to be able to help people learn how to speak English. This helps people tremendously in so many ways. It helps people create an entirely new life for themselves and their families. For many people, learning how to speak English is a matter of life or death as it will help them escape from war torn countries, systematic abuse and other atrocities. Fluency in English can help people obtain jobs and get accepted into schools in English speaking countries. Learning how to speak English will open the doors to my students’ futures with a multitude of economic opportunities throughout the entire globe.
