This is the story of a hardworking, middle aged couple who have been caught up in a perfect storm of illness, loss of income and an unexpected tax debt resulting in a now desperate financial storm that we cannot find our way through.
In May of 2018, I made the decision to take some time off work to care for my adult son who was struggling with severe mental health issues. My husband and I decided that we could manage with the loss of one household income for a short time. We were doing okay, then in July we were notified by CRA, that they were doing a 5 year audit of my husbands income tax returns. This resulted in an amount owing of $30,000 that we could not pay, so in September my husbands income was hit with a 30% wage garnishment from the CRA. Within a few months, we had blown through the little savings we had, maxed out credit cards and a small line of credit trying to keep up with our monthly bills.
We are now in the midst of a storm that is threatening everything we have, everything we have worked for, including our home. For the first time in 30 years of marriage, I am trying to figure out how to get groceries, not even to mention how to pay the bills this month. I can’t believe I am on here, doing this…asking for help.
I know things will get better. My son is doing well so I’m returning to work soon. The CRA debt is down to about $10,000 so that’s good. We have done everything we can to get through this but we have now come to the end of our resources. We can see the sky getting brighter ahead, but right now, we are in the darkest part of the storm and we need a little help to get us through it.
Thank you in advance…
