I am a 44 year old single mother of 7 year old twin girls – one of whom is autistic. My ex mentally and emotionally abused me for years, and three years ago I left him with the help of the Woman’s Refuge. I lost everything I had because of him, and when I left him I had just over £100 to my name. I’ve slowly built myself up again over the past few years, but now find myself in a very difficult situation.
I have been renting a flat, but they’ve just put the rent up to almost £600/month, the owner has put it on the market, and my lease runs out the end of January 2016. I have a job as a Support Worker, but because I can only work school hours, it is only part time, so I have a very low income – around £450/month. There is no way I can afford to keep renting.
If I can buy a house and get a mortgage – I’m looking at properties under £100,000 – my payments would be less than half of what I’m paying in rent, but because I’m on such a low income, I can’t get a mortgage. I have saved up some money for a deposit, but I don’t have enough to even convince mortgage lenders to look at my situation. I also don’t qualify for Housing Benefit because of the money I’ve managed to save.
The main problem I have, however, is that my one daughter is autistic, and doesn’t cope with change well at all. She was hysterical when I told her we’ll have to move soon – she simply can’t understand or cope with it. We need a place we can call our own, where we can be settled. I can’t keep moving the kids from place to place and school to school, and I really am desperate to buy a house we can call our own.
My hope is to get enough money to be able to have a decent deposit so I can get a mortgage and give my children a stable home. I don’t need luxuries or anything fancy, just a roof over my children’s heads.
Any donation would be greatly appreciated and could potentially be life changing, and keep me and my children from being homeless after Christmas.
