At the start of Covid in 2020, I lost my job and things began to go downhill financially from there. I was forced to move back in with my ex because the rent on my apartment had gone from $625/month to $1100/month in only two years. It took many months to start collecting benefits and in the meantime, I was only able to pay the minimum amounts on my two credit cards. I found a new job in early 2021 and have been paying on my credit cards every month, but the interest rate had made the debt balloon to $6,000 at that time.
Between 2021-2023, I also added the following financial debt which amounted to around $9,000.
- My sister tragically passed away and I had to pay some funeral expenses $1,000 and travel costs of $1,000 since my family is on the opposite coast.
- I had some expensive dental work of around $3,000 out of pocket costs for a root canal and a partial denture.
- I have a disease called keratoconus, which is slowly distorting my vision. In an effort to slow the progression of the disease, I had cross-linking surgery done on both eyes. The insurance did not cover all of the costs and I was responsible for $4,000.
- I also suffer from lichen planus, a skin disease with no known cause or real cure. Insurance didn’t pay for the tests or the doctor to the tune of $700.
I’m down to owing around $13,000 now. Any amount would help and all monies will be paying Citibank and Chase.
