I am a twenty-six year old college graduate, and I am currently living with my incredible fiancée and our two year old little boy. My partner and I both work hard to try and give ourselves and our son an amazing chance and experience in life. This year at the end of October, 2019 I am having major surgery on my chest. For me, this surgery is not optional. However, this surgery is most certainly not affordable in my current situation. This medical procedure could be life saving for me, and certainly life changing for all of the people heavily involved in my life. However, it is not covered by my insurance and I am being given no choice but to come up with the funds out of pocket in order to have access to this surgery.
The total cost for my needed surgery is going to add up to over $10,500 dollars out of pocket. That cost is not counting the travel costs to go halfway across the country to access this surgery, as well as accommodation to stay in town for two weeks, one before and one after my surgery date for observation. We have been trying to figure out if it would be cheaper to drive to the state my surgery is taking place or to take a plane and fly there. There are pros and cons to both options and, as money is tight in this scenario, we plan to travel this most cost effective way we can find as it dawns closer to the day of my surgery.
Aside from the travel in and of itself, my partner and I would be out of state for several weeks. This would involve my fiancée and I both to take off work for the weeks I would need to be out of state, as well as myself taking off work for at least a full month after the surgery is complete. I’m struggling to come up with the money and can’t afford to take out loans or to not get this life saving procedure. I have been working to save as much money towards this surgery as I am able, however I have fallen incredibly short from the mark and need assistance to make this happen and not be denied or left in debt for the rest of my existence.
I work in a school setting, and while I love working with the children and seeing them learn, grow, and turn themselves into amazing people with unique traits and personalities, my wage is simply not enough to cover bills, family life, and medical expenses when needed. I am hopeful that I will be able to get this surgery and spend many loving years with my small family afterwards.
