My name is Astrid Victoria Vasquez, I am 24 years old, I recently graduated from nursing school in May. I studied an abroad in Puerto Rico at Antillean Adventist University. I was born in Boston, Massachusetts with both parents born in El Salvador. I decided to study in Puerto Rico because it offered me a much more affordable education. Now my next step is to take my NCLEX (Nursing boards) to officially be licensed as a registered nurse. The test is very challenging, and I need study at least six months to take this test. I really want to feel confident before taking this test, so I want to study as much as I can. I am so close on reaching my goal but yet so far, for the reason that I had to put a hold on my study time. The reason why I had to put a hold on it is because I started a dental treatment. I have a few issues going on with my teeth. The first one is that I have short roots, I was born like that, and according to my dentist this is something genetic. I also have gum disease which caused me to lose teeth bone. Now obviously having short roots doesn’t make it any better. All of this has caused my teeth to move around and shift and this has made my teeth completely flare out. If I don’t do anything about it my teeth will fall out, because they will be keeping moving out, and at the same time I will lose teeth bone which will cause my teeth to fall. As you can see there is so much going on, I am very scared! I want to keep my teeth, I want to save my teeth. I mean who wouldn’t right? As I spoke to my dentist I saw how much of an emergency my condition is, so immediately I started the first treatment which was to strengthen my gums and oral bones with a treatment called “Perio Protect Tray”. This tray is something you use twice to three times a day and helps to kill the bacteria in the gums. Eventually I will heal from this but as recommended from my dentist I should use this a life time. The second part of my treatment was to get Invisalign due to my flared-out teeth. If you’re thinking “Why doesn’t she just get braces? It’s way cheaper?” Well I can’t because of the tray that I have to insert on my teeth every day. That tray carries the medicine to kill the bacteria, and with braces I wouldn’t be able to insert the tray on my teeth. The Invisalign it’s going to cost me $6,850.00. I am not doing this for any cosmetic reason, but I am doing this because I want to save my teeth. I already started with the first procedure which was to get the Perio Protect Tray. Then the first week of November I will start Invisalign to fix the symmetry of my teeth. Due to all of these expenses I had to put a hold to my license and work two Jobs to try to pay this in a year, I say a year because after a year I will be charged an interest rate. This Means that for a whole year I will not be able to study but to work day and night and live pay check by pay check to cover my dental treatment, college loans and my life expenses. I am reaching out to this community asking for help or better said “begging for help”. I just want to start preparing for my nursing test, I want to be a nurse already, but this has put a big hold in my life, and I can’t ignore my dental issue, it’s a big problem. If I don’t take care of it now I don’t want to imagine how I will end up. So, I am asking with a desperate heart, from someone who just finished college and is complete broke. I really hope that someone out there reads my story and is able to help me. Any donation will help me with this cost. Thank you for your time and hope to hear from someone soon! God bless you all.
