Before I begin, yes, I have a job. And no, I don’t work at the local dollar store.
I’m a MIG welder and I make decent enough money to keep food in my toddlers belly. Everything else is still a struggle.
I didn’t have insurance when I gave birth to my son and I’m paying hundreds of dollars a month just to keep from getting my paychecks garnished. I’ve just started paying these debts and it has already taken a financial toll on me.
After paying my debts down little by little and paying for childcare so I can continue to work, I barely have the money to pay rent and utilities. I have no transportation of my own and because of these debts, a laughable credit score. I make too much money for any government assistance program but all of my paychecks go straight into someone else’s hand and the scrape change gets my boy fed and sheltered, barely. This was the only thing I could think of… to ask someone else for money is embarrassing enough as it is, but it’s all I can count on.
Heres a basic breakdown of what I have figured:
$35,000 for medical debt
$65,000 for a small, livable home
$5,000 for a reliable vehicle
$25,000 to keep in a savings account for emergencies while I continue to work towards building my credit back up.
I have $470 to my name as of right now (payday) and I am already two weeks behind on daycare payments ($125 a week). Rent is due in two weeks ($600 a month) and winter has hit our heating unit hard giving us a $500 electric bill (also due in two weeks).
I have already sold most of my belongings with any monetary value except my StraightTalk phone that I keep minuets on in case of an emergency with my son and a hand full of old Simpsons DVDs to keep him entertained.
Total open honesty: I only have work clothes with burn holes, oil and rust stains. I literally shower with my dish soap to avoid any unnecessary spending on myself.
I’d really like to get back to living a regular life again where I can do laundry within the confines of my own home. Shower with hot water and actual lady like toiletries.
If I continue to do this on my own it will take me over 6 years to get on track. I’m not sure if I can keep up with everything for that long.
