I received spinal fusion surgery as a 4 year old for Kyphoscoliosis and Spina bifida but received no other postoperative care as my country of Sri Lanka doesn’t have the knowledge or facilities. A few years ago my spinal pain started getting worse with numbness in my legs, but the orthopedic surgeons here said that it was normal and to be expected. I was told to just face the pain no medication or treatment.
But a few weeks ago things took a turn for the worse when my pain went a few levels up and then I lost feeling below my knees when I turned and collapsed. I realized that I was running a risk of permanent paralysis and did Xrays and checks and now I’m told that I need urgent treatment which is not available locally.
The cheapest noninvasive treatments I checked were USD 5000 – USD 8000 for my particular situation. The surgical ones are well over $80,000 which I can’t even think of. My salary is barely around $300 and that is just enough for house expenses, food and rent. I barely have enough savings for the $1000 dollar air ticket. I’m feeling hopeless and panicking.
As an independent person, I don’t want to be bedridden my entire life, especially in a country like Sri Lanka which has no facilities for the disabled. I hope someone will please take heart and help save a person’s life and living.
