In February of 2018 I decided that I was no longer happy working for other people or large companies and decided to start my own business and work for myself. After having had my house on the market trying to sell it I realized that there was a need for Home Inspectors. I looked into what was involved in becoming a home inspector and talked about it with my wife. At the time my wife was employed full time and I had recently become unemployed. Being the supportive wife that she is, my wife said that she was fine with me becoming a licensed home inspector if that’s what I wanted to do.
So I began the process. In order to get licensed I needed to go to a school that is recognized by the state I want to be licensed in and take the home inspection course, pass that course and then take a national exam and pass it. We paid for the course and in March 2018 I started the classes. The course was a 5 day per week for 3 weeks course. I attended each day and passed my test at the school. I then took the national exam and passed it. Great! Things are looking up! Or so I thought. Now that I obtained the proper license I can start getting the business license (not the same as my inspector license) and Liability insurance. Home Inspectors must carry a $300k insurance policy as a condition of obtaining the license. I was also advised that a website would be beneficial to my business, so I made a website and paid for a “.com” domain to host my website. All of this costs money.
My wife and I put everything we have into getting the business going, and it wasn’t cheap. And after doing all of that, my wife suddenly gets terminated from her job due to “downsizing”. So it’s July 2018 and I’m unemployed, wife is unemployed and we just spent pretty much all we had on the new business venture. Luckily we both had transportation. She had a car that she was still making payments on and I had a truck to use for my new business and it is paid for, no loan on it. So we both had a way to find work even if part time. This would help while business is slow. New businesses can take a while to get going and making money. Now comes October 2018 and we are managing okay, things could be better but we are not getting behind on bills and are eating. That is until the 27th of the month. My daughter and I had planned on meeting at a restaurant for lunch. I decided to drive my wife’s car since it gets better gas mileage than my truck. A few miles down the road is when I encountered a bad driver. I can’t go into specific details because the case has yet to be resolved. But the other driver was determined by the investigating officer to have been “driving aggressively” and was at fault. I sustained minor injuries physically but I continue to suffer from another condition that was caused by the accident. My wife’s car was totaled. And since we were still paying on the loan the insurance company would only pay off the loan. At the time we were doing okay paying the payment but we certainly were not in a position to buy another car. We had no down payment, not good credit and only part time jobs that we hadn’t had for very long. No bank would loan us any money for a car. So now all we had was my truck. And my wife was supposed to start a new job that required her to have a car in order to perform the job. But she couldn’t take that job since her car got wrecked and I need my truck.
So far we’ve been managing to keep our house and the utilities on, thanks to family helping us financially, but it’s getting tougher with no relief coming soon. The family has their needs to and can’t continue to help us. I completely understand that and I am very thankful for that help. But we now owe money for that help. I should be getting a settlement on the personal injury side of the accident, but those cases can take a year or two and longer sometimes. Plus, the settlement will likely not be sufficient to get us out of debt and another vehicle. And negotiations haven’t even begun yet. We are going to lose the house and everything we own if things don’t change soon. In order to generate business I need to be able to visit clients and have lunch meetings and such as a way of promoting my business. I also need to advertise. It all costs money and right now I can’t afford to pay for it. So I’m stuck. I need money to make money and I have none. I hate to ask for help but I really need it. This car accident has really put a strain on my life as well as my wife’s life. She didn’t deserve to lose her car. And although she doesn’t blame me, I feel responsible for her not having a car now. We live in a rural area so public transportation is out of the question. I would love to be able to replace her car and pay up some bills and debts to the family. I appreciate any and all help I can get and may God bless you.
