First I’d like to say that I in no way feel entitled to any money I didn’t earn myself. I came across this website and figured it wouldn’t hurt to give it a shot.
I have been a police officer for a small coastal town in North Carolina for the last 9 1/2 years. I take pride in the work and I try to make every encounter a positive one. I love how diverse people are and how we each have our own life experiences.
I purchased my home in early 2009 just before the real estate market went down. I was newly married and had a baby on the way. My daughter was born later that year and her mom and I lived in the house until early 2012 when we got separated and she moved out. Since then we have both had 50% custody of our daughter. There were no major expenses from the divorce as we have remained friends throughout it all. I was fine financially for a while because I had some money saved up I could use to cover the drop in household income since I was now responsible for all the bills and mortgage. After my savings was gone I took a loan from my 401k. When that was gone I had to make all the payments from just my income and my income was reduced due to paying back the 401k loan. I should have foreseen this and tried to make plans to avoid it before it was too late so I can only blame myself. I missing payments every now and then and would usually be able to get caught back up. I was out of work for a few months in 2015 due to having my appendix taken out. In 2016 I was out of work again for sleep related issues. All this time being out had used up my sick leave so my income was reduced. I got behind on my mortgage but I was able to make enough payments to keep it from foreclosure. I applied for mortgage assistance but was not approved. The main reason being that I have a decent paying job. I got further behind and then learned that I could no longer make partial payments and I was not able to make the minimum payment to get caught back up.
I currently owe a little over $5,000 to get caught back up and avoid foreclosure. I paid $129,000 for the home and owe about $110,000. I would like to get caught back up and re finance so my payments will be less.
Thank you for taking the time to read this. I feel vulnerable asking for help this way but I know I will pay it forward in the future. Thank you for taking the time to read this.
