Allow me to share a chapter of my life story with you. I am Chris, a husband and father who has always worked tirelessly to provide for my family. Our lives until now were perfect, normal, happy, healthy and even uneventful. I’ve worked in my trade for 19 years without incident. However, life has tested my strength in unimaginable ways. Not only am I unemployed from the Pipefitter’s union, but I’ve also suddenly faced daunting health challenges. Today, I humbly ask for your support as we navigate these turbulent waters together.
For years, I poured my heart and soul into my work as a dedicated member of the Pipefitter’s union. It was more than just a job; it was my passion and the foundation of our family’s future. Then, life threw me a curveball. I was laid off and found myself drowning in bills and mortgage payments. And without contributing hours to my health care plan I’ve ran out of banked hours and am forced to pay $1,600 a month out of pocket or we will be without health insurance with a son who plays high school football. But that wasn’t all—health challenges further darkened our path.
I’ve faced health challenges that tested my resolve. A pinched nerve in my C6 and C7 caused temporary nerve damage, impacting my ability to work and provide for my family. The diagnosis of Type 1 diabetes added another layer of complexity to our lives, requiring life changes and constant attention to stay ahead of. To top it off, I underwent emergency surgery for a torn retina, plunging us into further medical debt all since January of 2023. Im healing fine and I’m certain I’ll get back on top eventually one way or another.
My unemployment, coupled with these health setbacks, has pushed my family to the brink of despair. Bills seem insurmountable, and the threat of losing our home is ever-present. I took out 2 personal loans equaling $20,000 and maxed out my credit cards to get by but time is running out. Just 1 year ago I could never have imagined asking strangers for help. But, that’s exactly what I’m doing and frankly, I’m embarrassed. My parents have no idea of our financial situation because my Dad was diagnosed with ALS in June of 2023 so I wouldn’t think of burdening them with this.
