My husband developed diabetes at the age of 11, and at 25 he went blind for 3 months. The doctors were able to perform several surgeries and save his eyesight in one eye.
Three years ago, my husband had a kidney transplant, so far, he hasn’t rejected the kidney, but he has developed side effects from the anti-rejection medication. He no longer can work. He has tremors in his hands, his memory has been affected, and he gets so tired that he can barely walk a block. The doctor has changed the medication, but he still suffers from the side effects.
He had to leave work in March, and I am trying to handle the bills by myself, but I am failing miserably. He has applied for Social Security Disability, but the earliest that he will receive a decision is 233 days. I am looking for a total of $7,500, $6,000 for medical bills, rent, and car payments, and $1,500 for a road trip to Colorado to meet the donor family on the anniversary of their son’s death.
My insurance doesn’t cover all his anti-rejection medications, so we have medical bills that we just can’t cover. Because of the side effects, he was in a car accident, and now we have a car payment for the first time in our lives. We have applied for everything with the Department of Health and Human Services, but I gross more than $1900 per month, so we don’t qualify for assistance.
I am hanging on by my fingertips until we can get Social Security Disability and Medicare/Medicaid. I just need a break until then.
October 20, 2023, is the 3rd anniversary of my husband’s kidney donor, and we have been invited to travel to Colorado and spend 4 days with his family. This would mean everything to my husband. He feels a connection with this family, but our finances have kept us from making the trip. I would love to surprise him this year, and make the trip to Colorado, and let him connect with the family in person. They are great people, who made the ultimate sacrifice and saved my husband’s life.
I am asking for this help, out of pure love for my husband. I am so grateful to still have him by my side.
We didn’t think he would still be with us, and because of the donor family, he is. I will work hard with this help and pay it forward wherever I can. We won’t take this gift for granted. Thank you so much for your consideration.
