Hi, my name is Jason and I am one of the many people who have found themselves a victim of the COVID-19 situation and in need of help. I have not been infected with the virus and neither has my family but we are facing a very bad financial hardship. My fiance and I are both career restaurant workers and we were both out out of work in March. We live in Florida with our 7 year old son and 18 year old daughter and we also have a Chihuahua that I inherited when my uncle passed away from cancer in September. The reason for the financial situation we are going through is as I said my fiance and I are both unemployed and have been since March. My fiance was scheduled to have a surgery done in the beginning of June but at the end of February her doctor told her that in the next few weeks the state was going to suspend any surgery that was considered to be non essential. He also said that she would need to move her surgery up because even though it was considered non essential, she would face the possibility of having serious complications if the surgery was not able to be done by the time it was originally scheduled in June. We had scheduled the procedure for June because here in Florida the restaurant industry is very seasonal and my fiance being a server makes about 85% of her total income between Thanksgiving and mother’s day. Her being able to work would allow us to save the money it would cost to have the surgery done that wasn’t covered by her health insurance and also give us a cushion for the time she was going to be out of work to recover. Since we had to move the surgery to the first week of March we had to take the money out of our savings for the copay and the $3500 the surgery cost was a good portion of what we had saved. A week and a half after the surgery the governor made an order closing all restaurants throughout the state for anything besides delivery and carry out, and both of the restaurants we worked at closed that day. We filed for unemployment on March 18 and I was not approved until April 27 and I didn’t receive my first payment until May 5 and that was only for $266, which is the amount of benefits I receive from the state every week. My fiance was denied for benefits 2 days later and was told she had to apply for the newly approved federal benefits and she was approved to receive $118 a week because she made most of her income from tips and they only counted a small portion of her actual earnings towards the determination. My first payment on may 5 was the first income we had received since March 7 and I didn’t begin to get paid on a regular basis until June 4 and I am still waiting for the back pay I am owed to cover the weeks I waited to be approved for my unemployment and the weeks I was not paid the full amount of benefits I should have for each week and we ended up going through the rest of our savings to pay for food and what we could for bills and rent and car payments to try to stay as up to date with the expenses as possible. We are a little under 2 months behind on rent and we are both 2 months behind on car payments. My fiance was able to get her finance company to defer the payments she missed and I was under the impression that I had done it too but when I called to set it up in March I was not told that I had to call every month to set up the deferment for the next month and my loan has been in default for almost a month and my car is going to be repossessed if I don’t make a payment of $902.64 by July 24. My landlord has also told us that he will be going to file for eviction on Wednesday 7/23 if we don’t pay him $800. There are a couple reasons why we are not able to do this. The first is that my fiance and I both lost our health insurance when we lost our jobs and she has had a few major complications after the surgery and we have had to pay $2900 out of pocket for her doctors and medication. The other reason is that I was actually able to find a new job and I went to work. This made me ineligible for unemployment obviously and after 6 days of work the restaurant I was hired at closed again because we had a co-worker pass away from COVID-19 and when the restaurant closed they laid off myself and one other person who was just hired because the loss of business made it too expensive to keep any of us, and I have not been paid for the work at the restaurant and I also haven’t had any unemployment benefits in 4 weeks. I have tried to get loans, have family or friends help but nobody can and I have been declined for every one of the loans because I have no income to pay them back. So I am praying for a miracle. The last thing I want to do is turn to the internet and hope that some stranger will see my story and help me keep my home and my car. The reason I really need to keep my car is in the area I live in the jobs in the restaurant industry that are available are about 40 miles away and I can use public transportation to get to work, it’s about a 4 hour journey but I work later than the bus runs and to take an Uber home would cost me about $1100 a month and that is more than my car payment and insurance cost so I don’t have a way to get to work without my car. I feel like I have failed my family and I have been very stressed and I have been falling in to spells of depression that I didn’t know we’re possible. I have no choice but to put my story out and hope someone helps me because if we lose our home, my family will also have to split up and live with different family members who are 350 miles apart from each other. So I am really begging for help.
