In March of 2022, my roommate of 5 years passed away. The home was in Charleston, SC, USA. He had cancer and had remarried his ex-wife who had moved back in with us. At the time of his passing I was making plans to move to Ecuador on May 1, 2022. After the funeral the wife demanded that I leave the home immediately. She knew my plans for leaving on May 1 but insisted that she could not have neighbors talking about her, a widow, living with a man. I’d been living at the address for 5 years. I was not a stranger to anybody. I knew I had rental rights, like a 30 day notice, but I discussed it with a neighbor and we agreed that it was better to leave than cause more animosity. So I had to rent an Airbnb for $1517.92 for the month of April 2022.
On May 1, 2022 I moved to Cuenca, Ecuador. My first night in Cuenca at my Airbnb I fell down a flight of concrete steps sideways. It was dark and unfamiliar territory. If I had fallen face first I’d probably be dead. By falling sideways I broke my fall with my right hand sliding on a brick walkway. I was lucky to get up and get help. I was taken to one hospital but they could not help me. I ended up at Monte Sinai hospital in Cuenca. Total bill for emergency, surgery, and overnight stay $1573.68.
I am seeking help because it would alleviate the hit that I took financially. It’s been a struggle. I also have elderly parents in Nova Scotia, Canada. They are not doing well and I may have to travel to help with moving them. They are 93 and 88. I would like to have the means to travel on short notice, just in case I get a phone call with bad news.
Both bills are here:
