My little brother needs help… from himself. My name is Long, a university student in California. I am also in need of help for my little brother, Khanh. He has down syndrome in which it prevents him from developing intellectually and physically at a rate by which he ages. Because of this, he cannot communicate by tongue. To add on, he cannot use the bathroom nor get himself food or water. Unfortunately, he made it a norm for himself to project his needs by violently banging his head against the walls, his fists and knees, and the floor. He would do so in the middle of the night and a majority of the day. Doctors and behavioral therapists are doing their best but cannot help him modify this behavior. The frequent head banging has left him with bloodshot eyes and a large, bruised mark on his head.
I live in a family of 7. Most of the year, I am away studying and researching. My mother and father are also busy trying to make an earning that is enough to pay for life necessities and for accommodations for my little brother. Whenever my little brother starts to head bang, we do our best to gently restrain him and calm him down. However, he is aware enough to realize that he does not like being treated as if he cannot live independently. Sadly, it leaves us in a paradox-like situation. We want to respect him and make sure he can live life comfortably given his lack of communicative capabilities. At the same time, he has made it a norm to head bang very dangerously in order to get our attention or project his needs. Therefore, it leaves us with no other choice but to gently restrain him from further damaging his head and hurting himself.
In posting this, I truly hope I can raise enough awareness to receive a donation goal of $300. The money will be used to buy my little brother a medical helmet and diapers (as he cannot use the toilet). I am not one to ask for too much as living in a family of 7 has greatly taught me to value what I do have, but value my family more. So in all the hopes I have now in aiding my mother and father with helping my little brother, I reach out to those seeing this in asking for donations. I am forever grateful for any generosity.
I have posted an image of one of his school’s medical helmet that we hope to buy for him.
