My Dad is Dying of Cancer-Want to Move Close to be With Him During Final Months

My father was recently diagnosed with Small Cell Lung Cancer. This type of cancer is very aggressive and is typically considered a death sentence. Unfortunately, this is the case for my dad, as he has been given 6 to 12 months to live.

I currently live about 4 hours away from my father. While that may not seem like a long way to some people, it is too far away to see him on a regular basis. I would love to move to the area where he lives so I could see him more often. Being able to take him to appointments, helping him with daily tasks and errands, and more importantly, being there to provide emotional support through this unfortunate time would mean the world to me. It would obviously also mean a lot to my father. My mother died unexpectedly 10 years ago, and I regret to say I didn’t spend much time with her the last year or so she was alive. I want this time to be different.

My problem: I cannot afford to pack up all my things, rent a U-Haul or moving truck, and start over in a new home or apartment. I am willing to downsize and bring mostly the necessities, but this is still not affordable to me.

I am asking for donations to assist me in either hiring a moving company or renting some sort of moving truck and packing, loading, and driving myself. I am also asking for help in order to temporarily support myself once I move. As you all know, groceries, gas, household necessities, etc. can be quite expensive. That being said, I am committed to living frugally and spending as little as possible. Depending on how much help my dad needs will dictate how much I will be able to work.

I am certainly aware that everyone has problems, so to be honest I am quite embarrassed to be asking you all for help. Believe me, I would love to be able to move close to my dad and help him without the extra worry about costs involved. From the research I have done, the cheapest moving company would charge well over $1,000, so I would like to avoid this if possible. Renting a truck and paying for fees and gas is a more realistic $400-$500. I also may have to pay a couple people to help move heavy items (I live on the third floor of an apartment complex with no elevator). Given the circumstances, though, there’s a pretty good chance some people may be willing to help for a couple hours at no charge.

Until I am able to line up a job in the new city, I am estimating I would need about $200 per week to make ends meet. My main goal is to be able to successfully make the move, so if I could even get enough just to get me there, I would be extremely grateful.

In conclusion, my father’s cancer diagnosis has been sudden, stressful, confusing, and sad. Although I know I cannot do anything to rid him of this, just simply being able to help him and be there for him while he is need would add some peace and happiness to the both of us.

If you could find it in your heart to help me achieve this goal, I obviously won’t be able to pay you back. What I most certainly can and will do is “Pay it Forward” in the future when I am able to help someone else who is in need.
