Hello and thank you for taking the time to read this!
I’ll get straight to the point: my now-ex boyfriend began stalking me in July. Showing up at my workplace (I’m a part-time tutor at my college), driving by aggressively when I was out, “randomly” showing up where I was, lurking in the parking lot after church…it was definitely a scary situation.
In August, he showed up outside a study room I’d booked at the library, “guarding” it by placing himself directly outside the door. I hadn’t told him of my plans to be at school, and I usually wouldn’t have been there since it was a day I didn’t have class. At that point I was terrified enough that I called a friend to walk me out, and I went straight to the courthouse seeking some sort of protection. They directed me to the local women’s shelter, where I filled out the paperwork for an ex parte domestic violence protective order (DVPO). I was granted the order in court the next day.
I then had to hire a lawyer, because my ex had representation to fight the DVPO. During the first case hearing, he had a lawyer and I did not yet. Trying to be calm and represent myself was difficult, but I managed it. I was fortunately able to make a down payment of $200 (10% of the anticipated total) to hire a lawyer before the next hearing – thankfully my lawyer understood how tight money is.
After a few continuances, I was finally granted a year-long no-contact order. My parents were very supportive and even used their emergency fund to help with the legal fees. They also care for my twin sister who has disabilities, so they have very little wiggle room in their budget to begin with.
The total amount came out to be approximately $2700 (fairly reasonable for the quality representation I received). We are currently overdue by $762.50, and I’d like to at least come up with that amount as soon as possible to avoid any interest charges. I’ve attached a screenshot of the invoice as verification of the amount.
With my part-time hours, I won’t have the extra money to pay that amount any time soon. I’m taking a full-time courseload, so adding more hours or getting another job would negatively impact my academic progress and likely end up stressing me out even more, not to mention cost more money if I have to retake a class.
Any help to pay the overdue amount and to replenish my parents’ emergency fund would be appreciated!
Thanks again for taking the time to read this, as well as for your assistance.
