Hi everyone. My name is Danielle Rebecca and I’ve made a big mess of my life and it now feels like I’m drowning. I’m hardly eating or sleeping because I can’t stop worrying
This is the weirdest thing I’ve ever done, and I truly don’t think I deserve your generosity, but I’ve never been more desperate. I moved to the US from the Caribbean. I’ve worked really hard and even with a Rheumatoid Arthritis diagnosis, I got into my dream PhD program.
So what went wrong? Despite all logic, I got caught up in a gambling addiction from June 2021 to January 2022. Growing up, I always had my needs met but had to save my allowance to be able to have the things I wanted. This continued into my adult life. Where despite working as hard as I do, I’m drowning in student loans and medical bills while I see other people living “their best life”. I went to a dark place and began chasing my big win. I’m lucky to have gotten out from the hold of gambling but I’ll be paying for my poor choices for a long time.
In that very short time, I accumulated 10s of thousands in debt that I’m slowly working to pay off by picking up extra shifts. I couldn’t do this for the last two months as I had major deadlines to meet for my program. As a result of this, I can’t pay my rent this month. I realize I’m lucky that one day, I’ll hopefully make enough to pay off my debts. God knows I’ll pay it forward. For now, I’m just hoping for enough money to pay my rent of 1600 (I’m locked into a lease downtown unfortunately) and allow me to stop hyperventilating. I know there are predatory loans out there that I could take out but I know this would just set my back and I’m working so hard to get my life back on track.
I’ve been dealing with this all on my own because my parents have sacrificed so much to get me where I am. I can’t bear to break their hearts. This is a very lonely experience, and it actually is such a relief to share this with you all.
