Hi, My name is Ben. In 2008 i was walking my girlfriend(later to be my son’s mother) home, and along the way a car drifted from the right lane, over the yellow line, over the opposite shoulder of the road and finally up onto the sidewalk we were walking on. I was struck, carried/thrown about a block from the impact and was left with traumatic brain injury, specifically anterograde amnesia. Which isn’t the movie kind of amnesia where you forget everything you ever knew, but i have difficulties making new memories. Due to that and a failing heart (Candida Endocarditis plus congestive heart failure) i’m unable to work. I’ve been applying for disability since the accident in 2008, it’s 2021 an i’m still being denied. It’s also been so long since i’ve worked now that i’m no longer eligible for disability as i have no current work credits anymore as this application process has taken over a decade and had to start over numerous times.
I live with my mom, who gets roughly $500 a month disability, and i get about 230 food stamps. That’s what we live off of. I owe over $15,000 in back child support, my son is 12 and child support has been racking up his entire life. I get sent to jail a few times a year for non-payment, and they don’t give me my necessary medications while i’m in jail.
Owing back child support also keeps me from having a drivers license, which is about the one thing i might be able to do even with my disabilities. I also am unable to drive my sick mother to her appointments because i have no drivers license. Her feet go numb(among other issues) so sometimes she can’t feel the pedals and driving is dangerous.
I need any help anyone is willing to offer. I don’t expect someone to pay off my child support, it’s just been 12 years like this, and the despair is crushing me. My mom talks about taking all her medications in one night so she can just sleep forever and be with her two sons/my brothers again. I’m ready to give up on life as well, but i cannot make my mother bury a third son.
We need help. Please, anything will help. I’ve long since run out of strength to persevere, i just don’t want to suffer anymore. I want to be able to help my mom. We still haven’t been able to get a grave stone for my brother who died 2 years ago and my mom feels guilty for not being able to afford one.
