My name is Victoria Lewis. In July of 1999, I was birthed by a woman who was an alcoholic, and addicted to crack cocaine. I was adopted (within my family) to a man a woman a shortly after entering the world. Aside from a less-than-strong immune system, I was able to live a pretty normally-functioning life. My father (who adopted me) suddenly passed away due to a pulmonary embolism when I was 11 years old, and he was the main breadwinner in my family. My mother and I have been trying to piece our lives back together ever since. I didn’t find out I was adopted until I was 15 years old which was due to a number of problems within my family. My mother’s physical health has been dwindling ever since I was in elementary school, but (as of August 2018) it has gotten to the point where she is unable to work. In June of 2018, she received a spinal surgery, and has not yet healed and may have to receive yet another. I’m currently a college student, and I have been endlessly searching and applying to jobs, but to no avail. We currently only receive $200 in cash assistance per month from the government, and $170 in food stamps. With my mom no longer being able to work and pay the rent since having her surgery, and myself not yet having found a job, we are being evicted from our 2 bedroom apartment (the rent was $1200 per month), which we have been living in for seven years. I am currently working on trying to secure my $1400 financial aid from my college, but it is hard as I can not provide a proof of address at the moment being that my rental agreement is now void. In May of 2019, my mother has a court hearing in which they will determine whether or not she is eligible to receive disability (ssi), in order to afford a place to live. For now, we will be staying with my sister for a while. We have been able to use some of the monthly cash assistance to afford moving boxes, and have packed all of our things, however we are currently short on cash to afford a storage unit and moving truck. I am simply asking for $250 in order to cover these fees. I also have not been able to purchase my textbooks for this semester (totaling $80, for used rentals). I am not asking for my textbook fees to be covered, I am just attempting to explain to you the extent of my need at the moment. Combined, my mother and I currently have $1.66 to our names, and are not expecting any other sort of income this month. Therefore we will not have any more money for food, toiletries, etc., until the third of next month. As I mentioned before, I am only requesting $250, to cover the fees of moving our belongings into a storage unit so that we will not have to start from scratch after this.
