After experiencing the flood in San Jose, CA. in 2017, I lost everything in my rental including furniture and clothes. In 2018, as my debt began to increase, I found a room rental in a housing share situation, and I decided to be a ride share driver in my mid-size 2006 SUV. It had 80k miles on it, but I needed the money to pay my mounting tax debt of more than 20k. I worked a part-time job, but without medical benefits. I worked out a payment plan, and have been making payments on this and other debt including student loans; rent to keep a roof over my head; and food to eat, as renters are not allowed use of the kitchen in the home. Additionally, I even had a little money to donate to my church for missionary work. I thought that things were beginning to turn around for the better.
In October 2018, the transmission in my SUV that I was using for ride share work became disabled, so that stopped my ride share work completely. As the season became colder, the house where I rent a room is increasingly colder. The landlord / roommate refuses to turn on the heater in the home due to rising energy rates. Mold is now beginning to accumulate in the home due to the rainy damp weather, and the sub floor is weakening. The portable heater I once owned was lost in the flood. Next, I became very sick and used all of the PTO that I had. I ended up losing my part-time job. Now, I’m 1 month behind on my rent; my savings is gone; no car; and debt is continuing to increase. Relatives have offered for me to move where they are, but they are 3000 miles away on another coast, and I have no financial means of moving this far away even if I wanted to do so (Maybe that’s why they offered… ;).
