I am writing you to ask for some assistance. My family has been experiencing a hardship for awhile.
We moved to Texas from Illinois in November, 2015. We lived in a very depressed area in the southern part of Illinois. We moved to help out our oldest son with his children. He was a single parent of two children.
We we’re living in Kaufman, Texas, about 27 miles east of Dallas, in 2017, when our oldest daughter got caught using drugs, including meth. Children Protective Services (CPS) got involved, and we were made temporary guardians of our 7-year-old grandson. The day she was court ordered to leave our house, our rent money was stolen. We had to move, and ended up in The Salvation Army Homeless Shelter in Tyler, Texas. We stayed there for a few months, and then went to the Hiway 80 Rescue Mission in Longview, Texas. Then in February, 2018, we moved into a trailer park back in Tyler.
Our oldest daughter went through rehab, and was allowed to get her son back. When this happened, we were still in the shelter in Longview. She joined us at the homeless shelter, and stayed there after we left.
Our youngest daughter, her husband, along with their three children moved down to Kaufman, and was staying with us. Our daughter was diagnosed with five displaced discs. Our daughter and the kids went to the shelters with us. Her husband has been in and out. The doctor’s were working her up for back surgery when they found out she was pregnant. The surgery had to be postponed until the baby was born. The baby was born on July 6th, 2018. She has gone back to her doctors to go ahead with her surgery. She has run into problems because of her being on Medicaid. We had a hard time finding doctors that take Medicaid, but we finally found a pain management physician. He ordered another MRI, and was then told that she needed to have a neurosurgeon to do surgery because nerves are involved. We have been searching for a neurosurgeon, but again are running into problems. Doctors that accept Medicaid limit the patients that they take each month. We have checked with neurosurgeons from Longview to Dallas, and none are accepting new Medicaid patients at this time. She was also told not to lift anything over 5 lbs, which means she can’t even lift her baby.
Our oldest daughter had an identity crisis and decided she wanted to swing the other way. The homeless shelter is a religious organization, and when they found out that she was in a relationship with another girl there, both girls were asked to leave. We weren’t going to have our grandson out in the streets, so we told them that they could come here for two months. One month to get jobs and another month to save enough to get their own place. The other girl moved, and our daughter and her son stayed with us. So, right now we have ten people living in a single-wide, three-bedroom trailer.
It now is February, and our lease expires by the end of the month. If we want to renew our lease, our rent will increase by $35. I know that’s really not a lot, but we need something bigger.
Here’s our problem. My wife and I both are on social security disability; My wife for about twenty years, and me about ten years. Our oldest daughter is working at IHOP, but only makes $2.13/hour, plus tips. She doesn’t make a lot of tips because she works from 10 pm to 6 am. There is not a lot of business during those hours. She does get some food stamps which helps with some food. Our youngest daughter can’t work. She gets food stamps that buy most of the food. That leaves rent, utilities, phones, household essentials, school supplies, and personal items for each person. By the time we pay that, it doesn’t leave much.
The second thing we are asking assistance for, is a reliable SUV. I have been looking and have found some about $3,000-5,000. We are requesting an SUV because they are easier for us to get in and out. We could also use the 3rd row seating. We have not had a car since the end of 2016. The van that we drove from Illinois couldn’t pass the state inspection, and it just wasn’t worth fixing up.
My wife and I have a hard time getting around. My wife has had two back surgeries, and diagnosed with “failed back syndrome”. She has an implanted medication pump that keeps her out of pain for the most part. She still has problems walking far distances. I have fibromyalgia, degenerative disc disease in my lower spine, osteoarthritis in both hands, and diabetes. I have been developing diabetic neuropathy in both feet, but over the past few months, it has gotten progressively worse. My feet hurt constantly, but when I lay down to go to bed, the bottom of my feet tingle and and feel like they’re on fire. I just can’t walk like I used to. There is a transit system, but it takes forever to get places. We can’t afford a taxi. Usually on our payday, we get a Lyft car to take us shopping. The only time we eat out is usually on our payday, and we usually order pizza.
We have four children in school. We run into problems when one of them has a dentist or doctor’s appointment. They are in a school district that is about 4-5 miles from our home. If they have an early appointment, we don’t have a way to get them to school after the appointment. If they have a late appointment, we have no way to pick them up from school. This causes them to miss the whole day, and two of them have missed quite a bit.
So what we are asking for is some assistance with a deposit and first month’s rent, and assistance getting reliable transportation.
Thank you very much for your time.
