Times are tough, and my husband and I recently found ourselves in quite the struggle. We battled with harassment from our upstairs neighbors for over a year, and it led to financial distress as my husband was unable to work the hours needed (he works from home). I have a heart condition and have been out of work since early 2020 at my Cardiologist’s insistence. My application for disability is still pending, and we won’t be getting an answer on that until at least another six months. I spend my days caring for and homeschooling my husband’s five year old daughter who I love as my own.
We went through the eviction process last month and settled to leave on the 31st. We borrowed money and took out loans so that we could afford the move, and found a small little rundown apartment for us. During this time, we also learned that I was pregnant. I have a history of miscarriages, so the stress has been extra scary for me but things thankfully seem to be going well so far; this is my first time making it to the second trimester, and I’m a month away from being in my third with very little complications.
We have been here in our new apartment for two weeks now, but my husband has been out of work for that time due to a lot of complications with electricity and other things that we weren’t expecting. I have tried many avenues to find extra money for us to get on our feet but I have come up empty handed. We have no fridge or stove – we are required to provide our own and have not had the capabilities of doing so. We also have no transportation and our small town does not have uber, which we were not expecting as I need to travel once or twice a month an hour back to where we previously lived to see my doctors – because of my heart condition, they are the only providers in my entire state that are able to assist me in my pregnancy, and can give me my best chance at survival as well as the ability to try avoiding a c-section (I would rather not undergo anymore surgeries, and am terrified of the idea of a c-section).
I have no one left to ask for help, and our debt is piling up quickly. My husband’s paychecks over the next two weeks will cover a small amount of food – we have food stamps, but the amount does not cover enough to feed a pregnant woman, her husband, and a five year old so we are out of food stamps and running out of food – as well as our rent. We still have electric and water to pay as well as loans to pay off and people to pay back. We also have three cats we care for, but luckily should have enough of their supplies to last us until next month at least.
I don’t enjoy asking strangers for help, but in the condition we are in now I’m beginning to feel it is necessary. We have been displaced and shaken up so much over the course of the last three months, and keeping our heads above the water has become near impossible for us. We’re just looking for a little bit of help to get us back on our feet.
