I am 79, wife is 71. In 2008 (stock market crash), I was forced to retire and 2 weeks before Christmas, wife was laid off from her job of 40 years after developing diabetes. I had no retirement, she lost most of her 401k. I started drawing SSA, she received SS disability in 2009. 2009, we took custody of 3 minor grandchildren and had no support. We only received medical benefits for the kids. We filed bankruptcy (Chapter 13) our credit scores plummeted from good to poor. 2010, wife was diagnosed with breast cancer with an abnormality in her blood cells showing characteristics of non Hodgkins cancer. From 2010 until 2017, we lived on Social Security and a small pension my wife received. We had received food stamps and donations from church (for medicine and food). During this time, two of the grandchildren became adults and moved. 2017, wife received a small inheritance which we used for a down payment on a car.
We have lived on high interest credit cards (up to 35% int.) and now are going to have to stop making payments on them (everyday expenses increased, eg. food, gas, home repairs). We have no life ins and a rescue pup with severe dental infection. We also need home repairs, new kitchen floor, insulation, heat/air unit. Any help would be appreciated very much. Blessings.
