Peabody markets themselves as a social housing enterprise, helping vulnerable people to afford council housing and rent.
However they do the opposite. Being a big huge company owned they use their estates to make drastic changes such as building works to up the value of the building land etc but which does nothing for the home owners.
Instead they target those people who have struggled so hard to hard to have a home and then destroy it by doing million pound renovations and charging those people living there etc.
Last year I got a bill for my mums property….( a tiny council flat) for £35000! This was cos they wanted to maintain the roof. The roof was fine but they decided it was old and they wanted to do it.
We couldn’t stop them and had to go to a solicitor as we didnt have that money ….barely had £35 let alone £35000!
They threatened court action and ccj if not paid..solicitor thought we had a good case but sadly it got to a point where we needed an independent surveyor…..and we couldn’t afford much more. The surveyor did say they had overcharged by a few thousand….but to prove it we needed a cost assessment….this would end up costing £30000….
Therefore we had to stop and couldn’t fight. I am now trying to pay £7000 fees plus the £35000 and the company are laughing. They also charged for their legal advisor and made me pay that.
As a result I have been made sick with anxiety and worry. I have no money and live in fear. They are now planning to do more works.
We have no power. My mother is elderly and cant pay. I cant fight this injustice as no money. All I can do is alert people and save money to get a proper assessment and solicitor who can make them justify their exploitation. We need to be able to progress this
I know there are probably lots of vulnerable people out there. I work my ass off but what if I was elderly myself and every penny I saved all my life to finally get a roof over my head was taken by pretenders ….pretending to champion and care for the vulnerable.
I’d like to be able to fight for all people like us. And stop big organisations using their power regardless of effect and outcome. Every little helps and is appreciated. One step at a time to change this xxxx thanks so much xxx
