I am trying to help my best friend Dmitry who needs money for the treatment of the long-term periodontitis. He lives in Chelyabinsk, Russia. He is occupied with the repair of electronic devices, but it brings him almost no money. Parents don’t help him and he has no one else who could help.
In 2011, he tried to treat his teeth in a government (free) dental clinic, but each time doctors only made more damage and caused an infection. This lead to the development of progressive arthrosis. Now Dmitry needs, at least, the removal and replacement of teeth with implants to stop the infection. The estimated costs are 4000-8000$. He cannot nearly earn enough money. He is also in the depression with constant suicidal thoughts. Many friends stopped talking to him because of the “negativity”, which only aggravates the situation.
This is how Dmitry described those events (originally in Russian, translated by me):
“My teeth ached awfully and I had been losing them one by one. I had to go to the governmental (free) hospital since I didn’t have money for private clinics.
One could receive a ticket for free there only before 8 a.m., so I came at 3 a.m. and found that the line was already long. The place was dark and cold, I suffered from pain and hunger and everything was steeped in the feeling of desperation. It seemed that we were in a concentration camp waiting for a loaf of bread.
Finally, I received a ticket at 8 a.m.
Then I entered the examination room.
I will remember that nightmare for the rest of my life.
An angry old woman started to yell at me right away.
– WHY HAVE YOU COME!? SIT IN THE CHAIR! NOW!!!!
– I’m afraid and I’m in pain… Please, don’t yell at me…
– I’M NOT GOING TO BE SENTIMENTAL!!! SIT IN THE CHAIR!!!
She took a dental probe and began to forcefully poke all the teeth. Then pierced the ill tooth.
All I remember afterwards was PAIN!!!!!!!! An awful PAIN!!!!!!!!!
I think I lost consciousness for a moment. Even when she removed her hand, the hellish pain continued to spread through the body as if I was in a meat grinder. I was barely understanding anything.
– GO TO THE X-RAY!!!! AND PAY FOR THE PAINKILLERS AT THE REGISTER!!!!
Staggering, I got up, grabbed the wall and plod to the cellar where the x-ray was located.
Another angry old woman greeted me with a discontented look. Her eyes were covered with a powder, green like fly’s abdomen. Her eyelashes were stained heavily with mascara and resembled fly’s legs. And she stared at me with those flies.
The pain was so severe that I couldn’t focus my vision.
– YOU ARE A DRUG ADDICT, YEAH?!!!! – she yelled.
– I’m not a drug addict. I have pain… Don’t yell at me please…
– YOU FREAK DON’T TELL ME HOW TO TALK WITH YOU!!!! SIT IN THE CHAIR!!!
I don’t remember how I paid for painkillers. I plod back to the examination room. The angry woman threw me into the chair, took a dirty syringe with the traces of someone else’s blood and injected me with a small amount of ultracaine. It wasn’t enough. The anesthesia didn’t work and the pain didn’t subside. But the doctor didn’t listen to me, she took the dental drill and forcefully opened my mouth.
I broke away and ran home sobbing, smearing snot and tears, whining from unbearable pain.
Next time I came to remove that tooth a year later. I thought maybe that time they could do it properly.
But they broke the tooth’s alveolus, left the jaw bone exposed and and didn’t sanitized that place properly.
I started to develop infectious necrosis.
I stayed alive only thanks to my friend veterinarian who managed to close the exposed bones and gave me an antibiotic.”
All that time Dmitry tried to earn money for better medical services but was unable to do that because of limited opportunities and overall low salaries at the job market. For example, he worked as a cashier and had a salary of 12000 RUB per month that was around 370$ then and would be only 180$ now. With that he considered himself rich.
It’s nearly impossible to organize a crowdfunding company in Russia because of gender stereotypes. Many people say that Dmitry must be able to earn money since he is a man. He was a victim of bullying many times when he asked for help or told his story.
Crowdfunding is our only hope. We also will be happy to receive any informational aid, especially on arthrosis treatment, and any ideas in general on what to do at all (charities that can help, clinical trials on arthrosis treatment where Dmitry can participate, how to make this company better).
