Wife and I bought a 2013 BMW X1 only a few months ago. Now, I know you’re probably thinking ‘oh, BMW, you must have a lot of money!’ .. No, we really don’t. It’s got 100,000 miles and we got it for around $11,000. We thought the car would last with regular oil changes (mechanic checked it out and said it was good) but last night it came up with ‘Engine Malfunction’.
We had it towed home to make sure it wasn’t going to damage itself.
A mechanic is now telling me that this could be a timing chain and even if it doesn’t require a whole new engine ($6000) the timing chain repair is on the order of around $3000. Saying this is a ‘known problem’ with these cars. We didn’t know so we feel blindsided by it.
My wife started a new job since her other one was down on hours right after we bought the X1 and so we’ve been digging ourselves out from that. She has to use our only other good car. While I can work from home I do need to go to the office sometimes so I can’t stay working from home forever.
All in all it’s left us in bad situation. We are a typical suburban couple and we usually make ends meet but far from flush with cash. Things like this make a person think about what things can really change the outlook. It’s not as bad as some people have it but it’s enough that it’s causing a lot of stress for us.
Anything will help. I’m hoping that we can make it through this and pay-it-forward.
