When it rains it POURS.
Where do I begin?
Last year, I finished up my grad program, and moved back to the state where I’m from. I had a car that was functional, not the most good looking car, but it got me to work and from A to B. The car got totaled at a stop light, with no injuries thank goodness. But I had to get another car.
Enter my Mini Cooper.
I had always wanted one, but never had the means. So I bought one off a lady who was selling it for $1000 cheaper than the dealer, and I loved it. Until one day… the engine oil pressure light came on. I took it to the dealer to see what I could do to repair it. They said it would be $3700 to fix the oil leaks! I took the laundry list of parts, and ordered them myself, and took a weekend to install them. $400 and two days of work later, I saved quite a bit of money!
But then , after eight years of marriage I got divorced. We tried marriage therapy for a year, but it wasn’t panning out. We left on fragile, but good terms, though she ended up taking all of my savings with her which is a meager $2000.
Then the therapist tells me that my insurance didn’t cover the costs of her appointments. And that I owe her $1500.
The plan was to save as much money as I could in order to move to a bigger city where my degree would be more marketable. So now I’m living with my parents to save money. I still haven’t been able to pay off the ex wife entirely OR the therapist.
Commuting 90 miles round trip to work, this Mini Cooper is the only thing thats keeping me afloat.
That is until the oil pressure light came on again. And an Engine Malfunction message. Turns out the Turbocharger is out and the oil valve solenoid isn’t building pressure. This is a whopping $5200 fix. I priced it out and I could do it over a weekend with $1000. It’s not pressing, so I could save for a few weeks and get it done. I paid for the dealer to diagnose it and they told me what needed to be done, and since the oil light has been off!
Until yesterday. When my car overheated (It has coolant), the Oil pressure light came on (It has oil), my battery won’t charge (Which I replaced), and when I arrived home, started to squeal, which made me do some research after promptly turning it off, and find out it’s probably the Timing chain that needs the whole thing replaced, so I can’t even drive it to the shop.
This car has been nickel and diming me for months… and with the ex, and the therapist to pay off, I don’t have the means for any of it.
After a few calculations, I need $1800 just to break even, let alone have any savings to leave, or pay any of the current payments.
When I am done with these repairs I am selling this car, and getting something reliable. Then saving my money and moving on, but I just can’t seem to get a leg up! Any help would be appreciated.
