Hello, my name is Jamie. I am finding myself here because my family is in desperate need of help. Our home consists of my husband, our youngest son and myself. My husband, Tony, is a very hard working man. He works nearly 16 miles from where we live, neither our home nor his job are on the bus line, the nearest bus stop is 4 miles from our house and 3 from his job. We live in Michigan (U.S.A.) and winter is quickly arriving. Walking to work is not an option (even though he is going to try if we can’t get this truck fixed). He blew his knew out when he was in the military and has some pretty severe pain and mobility limitations in it (but he doesn’t let that prevent him from working). He doesn’t even have a winter coat, just a hoodie and a Michigan State Spartans leather coat he got as a gift from a friend for his birthday last year. We own a 2001 Nissan Xterra 4WD that we bought from our son-in-law when our van died for good last year. We just replaced the front brakes, rotors, calipers, valve cover gaskets and plenum gaskets about 2 months ago (that was very expensive). Now the truck seems to be having MORE problems. In addition to the heat and air not working and needing tires for the winter, the transmission needs to be replaced. It locked up and apparently a simple fix is not going to work. We were quoted $3,800 to fix the transmission. We depleted our savings (which we were saving for the heat/air, tires, Christmas and grandson’s birthday) recently helping my 65 year old mother with medical bills, new locks and security measures after she was assaulted by her (50 year old) roommate. We knew we weren’t going to be able to fix the heat/air or get tires for the truck or even winterize our home, but we figured we would still make it through the winter months until we could save up some money and do these things little by little next year (or better yet get a decent vehicle). But now with the transmission locked up we have no way of fixing the truck so that it at least runs enough to get him back and forth to work. I can’t work due to a back injury, I had surgery and am now going through physical therapy 3 times a week (which I also won’t be able to do). We can’t afford to get a new vehicle, taking on a car payment would be pointless because we wouldn’t be able to to make the payments right now so our only option is to fix the truck we have and pray it lasts until we are able to get something else. Neither of us has any family that we can ask for help. Our 22 year old daughter who is a single mom of a 1 year old beautiful son offered to take on a 3rd job to try to help us (she lives in a different part of the country). She already works 2 full time jobs as a waitress, works Saturday afternoons in her boyfriend’s father’s store, and cleans a few houses throughout the week, she barely has time for her son and daycare is expensive, so her taking on a 3rd job really wouldn’t be feasible (but she offered, God bless her). We are cutting back on everything we can, including what our doctor’s call “necessary medications”. We are eating a lot of peanut butter sandwiches, ramen noodles, tuna fish and Aldi brand mac n cheese (yes, there are days we don’t eat at all because we are trying to put together as much as we can to fix the truck, but I don’t think we are going to come anywhere near what we need in time). We would get rid of my husband’s cell phone but it is required for his job. We have cancelled family Thanksgiving and Christmas to eliminate those expenses. We aren’t even turning our heat on at night when it is getting cold so that our utility bill is as low as possible. We are cutting every corner we can think to cut but we have only been able to come up with about $325. If anyone can please help us towards our total goal of $3,800 ($3,475 after what we have saved) we would be so grateful. I truly don’t like having to ask for the help of others, I am used to being the one that helps others when they need it, but I have no other options. Thank you for reading my request for help.
