I’m 19 and I moved to Indiana about 4 months ago from Oklahoma with my girlfriend. She has direct family here: Mom, Dad, two younger siblings.
Neither of us are actually from Indiana, so we don’t know anyone besides people we work with.
I have a 98 V6 Ford Mustang with 285,000 miles on it, it was my first car, I bought it myself for 900 dollars and it lasted me 3 years without any major issues. But now it is “dying” on me, in a sense. The throw out bearings, power steering pump is going out, the fuel pump, and I think the rotors or something are going bad. The point is it is going to cost more to fix it than the car is even worth, especially because the car has body damage to the front driver side. Dents in both driver and passenger door from being backed into. And some other things that simply make it not worth to fix it.
I have replaced the throw out bearings twice now, this is the third time they are going bad within a period of a little over a year. I don’t know if it is the car or if it is driver fault, a mix of both? Regardless I don’t want to and don’t have the money to fix it again. So here I am, online trying to get some help. I want something that will last me through college (last 4 years at least).
I’ve done research on Toyota Camrys, Honda Civics, etc. Cars that are supposed to last a very long time, cheap to maintain, cheap insurance, etc.
I’m not sure how long my car is going to stay running for, in the meantime I’m saving all the money I make. I have 2,000 saved but I would like another 2,000 to match it. If I can get 4,000 dollars to buy off a private seller.. that would get me enough money for title transfer, insurance.. Any possibly repairs the car may or may not need. With 4,000 I could cover all that and probably be able to get a car with a price around 3,300 or so.
I have tried financing a vehicle with my 2,000 saved as a down payment (car’s priced around 5,000-6,000) (Car’s at dealership’s are much more expensive then from private sellers) but I’m younger and my credit file is “thin”. I have a credit card that I’ve been using, spending 30% of my limit, paying it back, repeat. And some other things that have given me credit, but my file is simply too thin and I’m too young.
I have no one to cosign for me or anything. So financing simply isn’t an option. To be honest it isn’t in my best interest to pick up a car payment and full coverage insurance anyways, since I’m wanting to start college soon. I do not want to start college and have payments. It’s simply cheaper to buy off of a private seller so I would like to have 4,000 saved and see what I can do with it. I have put of college for the move to Indiana, the house.. And now I’m putting it off because of my car.
I’m just so ready to get started it is unbelievable, I want to make something of myself. Tired of working heavy labor jobs, or low paying jobs that don’t go anywhere.
I truly appreciate any and all donations, all these things just went wrong at once and I wasn’t expecting it. Most the money I had saved went into the house, furniture, washer dryer, etc. I wasn’t ready for my car to start having issues.
Worst comes to worst.. I use 1,300ish of 2,000 saved to fix my mustang if I don’t have enough for a car by then. (I’m listing this as car repairs, since it’s the closest thing.)
