In a world where financial stability is an essential cornerstone of personal growth, opportunities often remain out of reach for many individuals, due to limited access to capital, especially in Africa.
I am a 58-year-old Ghanaian who was fortunate to emigrate to the United States about 32 years ago. I am the founder of TINYLOANS MICROCREDIT ENTERPRISE, a Ghanaian company that provides micro loans and micro credit to hundreds of petty traders and private commercial drivers to use as capital to establish and boost their petty-trading and transportation businesses.
About a year ago, I embarked on a mission to empower those who have been marginalized by traditional financial institutions, specifically hundreds of petty traders and individuals who have been left out of the financial market. My goal has been to provide them with the opportunity to thrive and grow their businesses through microloans and credit facilities. But I can’t do it alone any longer as the demand has grown exponentially in a very short time. I am seeking your support and contributions to raise the capital needed to make this vision a reality for these countless petty traders and drivers. Together, we can create economic opportunities and foster financial inclusion for those who need it most. Join me in this meaningful endeavor to make a lasting impact on the lives of countless individuals striving for a better future in Ghana, West Africa.
Over the years, I have had occasion to visit my home country, Ghana a few times. During these visits, I observed first-hand the hardship and difficulty, especially women face daily.
Some of the hardships and difficulty include but not limited to the following:
Limited Access to Education: Many Ghanaian women, particularly those in rural areas, have limited access to quality education. This lack of education can perpetuate cycles of poverty and restrict opportunities for personal and professional growth.
Unemployment and Under Employment: The availability of formal job opportunities is often limited, leading to high levels of unemployment and underemployment. Even when jobs are available, women may face discrimination and unequal pay for equal work.
Lack of Economic Opportunities: Entrepreneurial opportunities and access to capital are often scarce, making it difficult for people, especially women to start and sustain businesses. This lack of economic empowerment can prevent women from achieving financial independence.
Gender Inequality: Deep-rooted gender norms and stereotypes can lead to discrimination against women in various aspects of life, including access to resources, decision-making, and inheritance rights.
Healthcare Challenges: Inadequate healthcare infrastructure and limited access to healthcare services can disproportionately affect women’s health, particularly in rural areas. Maternal mortality rates remain high due to challenges in accessing proper maternal care.
Domestic Responsibilities: Women often bear the brunt of domestic responsibilities, including childcare, cooking, and household chores. This can limit their ability to pursue education and employment opportunities outside the home.
Child Marriage and Teen Pregnancy: Child marriage and teenage pregnancy continue to be prevalent issues, particularly in rural areas. Early marriage can cut short a girl’s education and limit her future opportunities.
Violence Against Women: Gender-based violence, including physical, emotional, and sexual abuse, remains a significant concern. Many women face challenges in accessing support and justice due to societal stigma and lack of legal recourse.
Limited Access to Financial Services: Capital: Women often have limited access to formal financial institutions and services, which can hinder their ability to save, invest, or access credit for business ventures.
Inadequate Infrastructure: Poor infrastructure, such as unreliable electricity and limited access to clean water and sanitation facilities, can disproportionately affect women who bear the responsibility for managing households.
Lack of Access to Adequate Health Services: Limited access to health services and family planning options can impact women’s overall well-being and ability to control their reproductive choices.
To help fill some of the gap left by traditional financial institutions who refuse to grant loans to petty traders like market women or unemployed individuals in Ghanaian communities, a few years ago, I established a micro-lending business in Ghana to give a hand-up to mostly market women and individuals in need of small capital to start and/or sustain their petty trading, as well as young men who were looking to work as drivers etc. but had no means to buy vehicles or start their own small businesses.
TINYLOANS MICRO CREDIT also offer micro loans to parents to pay their dependents’ school fees when the school semesters begin and the parents have no money to send their wards to school.
In addition, TINYLOANS MICRO CREDIT works with men who are seeking vehicles to operate a taxicab and other transportation businesses by offering them loans to buy the vehicles and then give them flexible work-and-pay terms.
Over the past one year, our micro-lending initiative has achieved remarkable success in empowering market women and drivers to achieve economic independence and uplift their families. These women and men play a crucial role in their communities by selling essential goods and produce, as well as provide essential services, and our support has enabled them to overcome financial barriers, expand their businesses, and improve their living standards.
I am reaching out today because the demand for our micro-loans initiatives has grown exponentially. While I have initially been funding this initiative using my personal income from my meager salary as an employee of a healthcare company, the rapid expansion of the initiative and the increasing demand for loans have put a strain on my finances.
Unfortunately, this situation is making it challenging for me to be able to keep funding the micro-loans from my pocket. That’s why I am humbly seeking support in sustaining and expanding our micro-lending business. Your generous donations will allow us to:
- Provide larger loans to more market women, enabling them to diversify and increase their trading activities.
- Offer financial literacy and business training programs, empowering these women with valuable skills to manage and grow their businesses effectively.
- Create a sustainable cycle of economic growth, as the market women repay their loans, which are then re-invested into new loans for other aspiring entrepreneurs.
- Economic Empowerment: Our micro loans will enable market women and taxi-cab drivers to acquire the capital needed to start or expand their businesses. This leads to increased income, economic self-sufficiency, and a higher standard of living.
- Job-Creation: As market women and taxi drivers expand their businesses or own their vehicles, they may need to hire additional staff or drivers, creating job opportunities for others in the community.
- Entrepreneurial Growth: Our micro lending will allow market women to purchase more inventory, expand their product offerings, and reach a larger customer base. Similarly, taxi drivers can upgrade to newer and more efficient vehicles, leading to increased earning potential.
- Asset Building: By owning their own cars or businesses, individuals can build assets over time, which can provide them with a sense of security and stability.
- Financial Inclusion: Our micro lending offers an avenue for market women and taxi drivers to access formal financial services, helping them establish credit histories and enter the formal financial system.
- Women’s Empowerment: Micro loans to market women can contribute to women’s empowerment by providing them with the means to run successful businesses, make financial decisions, and contribute to their families’ well-being.
- Community Development: The success of market women and taxi drivers who benefit from micro lending can lead to increased economic activity and overall community development.
- Reduced Poverty: By providing the means for individuals to generate higher incomes, micro lending contributes to poverty reduction and improved living standards for borrowers and their families.
- Skill Enhancement: As individuals manage and expand their businesses, they may develop valuable skills in financial management, customer service, and entrepreneurship.
Our demand is limitless because the need is so high and growing every day. Nonetheless, I am seeking One-Hundred Thousand dollars ($100,000) as initial seed money to boost and sustain this micro lending initiative, as well as open branches across the 16 regions of Ghana.
