Hello, my name is Shane Young. Thank you for taking the time to read this over.
I am an expat from Canada living in Japan with my wife and 2 daughters aged 9 and 3. I have been here for 5 years now. I teach English in public schools and at English conversation schools or ekaiwa.
I currently earn around ￥260,000 per month. This seems like a decent enough salary for someone living in the U.S.A. or Canada, but in Japan it`s about half or less of the average salary mans income. That is to say, what the average salary man in Japan can do, I and any other teacher in Japan will never be able to. The cost of living is about 5 times higher than it is in North America for the items we need to live a healthy lifestyle. I work 6 days a week and wake at 5 a.m. Monday through Saturday. I have been in a tremendous struggle to keep my head at water level.
If you asked me “Why not go back to Canada?” I would answer “My wife is from Japan and spent 6.5 years in Vancouver with me. Our first daughter, Miyuka, was born there. My wife felt it was very important for her to have a Japanese upbringing. She offered the idea of us moving to Japan to let her experience Japanese culture. I resisted, but in the end she will always be the one who wins. I love her so much”.
Although I am here to ask you to help me raise money to help support my family, I am not here to ask you for your money without the chance for something in return. I have been thinking about a few ideas and the two best are what I am about to show in as simple a way as I can possibly explain my intention.
I have a web blog called webuyz. I created this with the idea that I would sell exclusive Japanese toys and some other items from time to time. I have to say that business is difficult, so I am changing my style with it and working on my site currently to make it happen. At this site, I intend to sell raffle entries for 2 dollars per entry, you can buy 1 or you may buy 10 entries. Your name and email address will be printed off and put into a draw box once for each entry you buy. On the said date I will draw one lucky winner who will receive the shown item on the web blog at no charge to the winner. This will be an ongoing raffle with new items listed after each draw. It’s a fun way to try to get some awesome Japanese collectibles and toys and it helps me to raise the money I need to properly support my wife and children here in Japan.
The second idea that I have is I will open an online English school with a full website and membership fees and hire teachers who will meet the students one on one at cafes. The students will pay a fee of ￥3000 per lesson and ¥ 2,500 per month. I have wrote a short business plan with somewhere around 20 pages that outlines not only this but other areas of interest. There are currently about 15 online English schools in Japan doing the same thing. One school name 7 act currently has 6,000 inactive paying memberships at \ 2,200 per month. Of course the company has done its due diligence and contacted the students to make sure they are aware they are still being charged. My intention is to do what they do but better, by offering monthly draws using vocabulary building games on the site for dinners for two and I will use other media sources on the member site to help the students to learn new phrases when they aren’t with a teacher. In this second idea I am proposing an opportunity for investment into the school. You help me raise the initial startup capital of approximately 500,000 U.S. dollars and become by contract a board member and shareholder in the company.
I am not looking for something for free, I believe in working hard to achieve your goals in life. I am asking for help because I am absolutely financially strapped and cannot get myself off the ground and my situation without help will lead to a dismal life for my wonderful family.. Please help me with either project. You won`t regret it.
