Last summer I was walking down the street in Albuquerque, New Mexico when I saw this guy with a guitar singing on the street. He was charismatic, he had a beautiful voice, beyond talented. He played me three songs and I was mesmerized. I couldn’t believe this guy hadn’t been signed by anyone. It set in motion a series of thoughts that led me to start my own record label, Guerrilla Music. I’m surrounded by talented people who are trying to catch a break so I thought, “why can’t I be the person that gives them that break?” So far, we’ve put on some live shows with local up and coming talent. We’ve produced a couple of albums. My partner and I have an idea for on a nonprofit branch of Guerrilla Music that will work with people in the shelters downtown as music therapy. We’ve done a lot of research to see if this is something that would be useful, and the residents were ecstatic about writing and recording their own songs.
At this point, all of the expenses are coming out of my pocket, so I haven’t been able to give it the launch it needs. I network like crazy and I’ve gotten some good sponsors who will give merch or advertise for the shows which is amazing. I have some ideas for events this summer that I’m really excited about and would love to make happen. I’ve applied for numerous grants, unsuccessfully so far. I’m having a hard time getting the capital I need to get a good running start so I’m asking for help anywhere I can.
Music is the love of my life. I’m also stubbornly fair-minded and revolutionary so I want to create something different and exciting with my company instead of following an age-old template that doesn’t resonate with me. I’m a writer and an artist myself, so it’s important to me to take care of the artist first. I believe we need to protect talent and inspiration and I know with a little backing I can make this grow into something amazing.
I would use the money for:
-Venues. (local shows and touring)
-Advertising upcoming shows. (Street advertising, in print, social media. I’d like to eventually hire an advertising person.)
-Equipment. (Sound equipment for live shows, DJ equipment, studio equipment)
-Recording Booth. (I’d like to make a soundproof booth for recording, a mobile one for nonprofit work)
-Marketing new Guerrilla Music albums.
Thank you for your time,
