Any and all money gifted will go towards building and starting an off the grid homestead and farm in Silver Ridge, Maine. Like many, my partner and I have a big dream of living off the land! With the cost of living increasing and the environmental degradation ongoing we feel that it’s the best way to ensure a future for our children and community. We already have a piece of land, twelve acres, very close to Baxter State Park. We need about 20k to really just get everything ready to go. We plan on working with the local Amish community and they have offered to help us build a small home for 7,000$. We would also like to install a small solar electric system with battery storage. We need to dig a few wells, as we plan on gardening and growing a large majority of our food. We also need to clear a few acres to build the house, outhouse/composting toilet, solar heated showers, green houses, small barn, and large garden spaces. To maximize our food storage and save on refrigeration costs we want to put in an underground walk in “root cellar”. We are planning on not only having a vegetable garden and traditional “working farm”, but also a tree farm. We would also like to be a natural/earth friendly, and organic farm that can offer agro tourism. As our land is so close to Baxter State park, we would love to host campers to tent or stay in a yurt and enjoy the surrounding natural wonders and learn how our farm works. We have so many other dreams for our land that involves the community at large. For example, we would like to hold art in nature classes, green house classes, foraging courses, basic camping and survival programs, and eventually even community events and retreats!
In addition to everything above we plan to take part in local farmers markets, partner with local businesses, and hope to donate fresh produce and meats from our farm to local families in need. In the future we also plan to offer a community garden space and a community composting site!
This dream of ours is not just to keep our family afloat with basic survival skills, but also to support and grow a community. We want to learn and teach sustainable agriculture and permaculture for the future of Earth, Maine, and all of our children. Thank you for you time and any and all help you can offer!
