I am a college student with an adorable 4 year old pet leopard gecko named Neptune. A few weeks ago I noticed he had something, that I thought was poop, coming from his backside. I left it alone, but a few days later it was still there. I did some research and did not find much online, so I made an appointment with the vet which was this morning.
The vet told me that Neptune has a prolapsed hemipenes. Basically that means that one of his sex organs did not retract like it should and is hanging out of him. Usually this is not a big deal, and it can be gently pushed back in with a q-tip or fixed by soaking them in sugar water, however, I did not notice Neptune’s prolapse until it had dried out, so the organ was dead and could not be safely put back inside him.
The veterinarian said it needs to be removed in order to alleviate any discomfort or pain and prevent future infection or harm to other organs. They estimate the procedure will be $382, which includes multiple medications, pre-procedure exams and fees. I also paid $70 for the appointment today, which is a big amount for me.
I have been looking into it, and I think this is a little higher than is typical for this type of procedure, but with an “exotic” pet it is hard to tell because places charge all different amounts. There is really only one veterinary office near me that treats reptiles, so I do not have a lot of options to lower the cost in that way.
Unfortunately, as a student, I am only able to have a part time job which does not pay super great. I pay for my school through FAFSA grants, multiple scholarships and oh so many student loans. I also have all those regular adult bills that people have like water, heat, rent, etc. In my current situation I am not able to spare the kind of money right now that I need to help my friend and pet.
Neptune is very sweet gecko. He loves to climb in his tiny hammock and he eats meal worms. He is pretty big for his age and has a thick tail, which means he is healthy sized. I got Neptune when he was very tiny, his stomach was the size of my thumb. He was a birthday present on my eighteenth birthday and he has been in my care for over 3 years now, I love him and I want to help him, I just do not have the money. Anything helps! Thanks.
